Wedding Dance Lesson Costs in London: A Complete Pricing Guide for Your First Dance

Your wedding first dance is more than just a tradition—it’s an unforgettable moment that sets the tone for your reception. Couples often wonder how much they should budget for lessons and choreography. Prices can vary widely depending on the studio location, the length of each session, and the number of lessons you book. This guide explains the typical cost of wedding dance lessons in London, outlines what’s included in popular packages, and offers tips on getting the best value. By the end, you’ll know exactly what to expect and how to plan your perfect first dance.

Average Cost of a Wedding Dance Lesson in London

Pricing for private wedding dance lessons in London is influenced by the teacher’s experience, the studio’s location and whether you book a single session or a package. According to wedding‑planning site Hitched, personalised first‑dance lessons in London average around £60 per session. Their data shows that the average cost for a complete first dance choreography is about £494, with typical package prices ranging between £200 and £500 and total costs anywhere from £147 to £1,178 depending on how many sessions you need. These figures are based on reviews from couples who used professional choreography services.

To put those numbers in context, most wedding dances last three to four minutes. A single 60‑ to 90‑minute session can teach you basic steps and give you the confidence to dance on the day, but complex routines or lifts usually require multiple lessons. If you’re after a polished routine that looks effortless, expect to book three to six sessions.

Package Options and Prices

Many studios offer multi‑session packages that reduce the per‑lesson cost. One London dance studio advertises the following prices for its wedding dance packages:

PackageDescriptionPrice*
Single sessionStandard 90‑minute lesson£139
2 sessionsTwo 90‑minute lessons£275
3 sessionsThree 90‑minute lessons (last‑minute package)£410
4 sessionsFour 90‑minute lessons£545
5 sessionsFive 90‑minute lessons£675
6 sessionsSix 90‑minute lessons£798

*Prices accurate at the time of writing; always confirm current rates when booking.

These packages include tuition with a professional instructor and, in many cases, studio hire. Booking several sessions allows you to spread out learning and refine your dance over time, which is especially helpful if you’re new to dancing. Some teachers will also travel to your home for an extra fee, which can save time but may increase the overall cost.

Factors That Influence Price

While the numbers above provide a baseline, your final investment depends on several factors:

  • Studio location: Studios in central or high‑end neighbourhoods like Mayfair or Marylebone charge more due to higher rents. Lessons at studios on the outskirts of London or in less exclusive areas are often cheaper.
  • Instructor experience: Professional dance teachers with decades of experience or competition credits may charge a premium. They bring expertise and can tailor choreography to your abilities.
  • Session length and complexity: Longer sessions (e.g., 90 minutes versus 60 minutes) cost more. Custom choreography with lifts and intricate movements requires extra time.
  • Private vs. group lessons: Group classes are usually cheaper per person but aren’t tailored to your song or style. Private lessons focus entirely on you, which speeds up progress.
  • Booking lead time: Last‑minute bookings and weekend appointments often carry higher fees. Scheduling well in advance can secure better rates and convenient time slots.

Understanding these variables will help you decide whether to opt for a single session, a small package, or more extensive training.

How Many Lessons Do You Need?

How many sessions you need depends on your goals, your schedule and how confident you want to feel on the day. Here are some general guidelines:

  • One to two sessions: Perfect if you just want to learn basic steps, get comfortable moving together and avoid the “wedding shuffle”. You’ll learn posture, timing and a few simple turns.
  • Three to four sessions: Ideal for couples who want a personalised routine that includes some flourishes or a dramatic entrance. You’ll practise transitions between moves and ensure the routine fits your song’s tempo.
  • Five to six sessions: Recommended if you want a show‑stopping dance, complex choreography or lifts. More lessons give you time to perfect movements and build muscle memory so you look relaxed and natural.

Remember that practice makes perfect. Even if you only book a few sessions, practising at home between lessons will greatly improve your performance.

Tips for Budgeting and Saving

  1. Start early: Booking well in advance allows you to choose off‑peak times and gives you more flexibility to lock in lower rates.
  2. Book packages: As shown in the table above, package deals usually lower the per‑lesson cost. Even if you think you only need two lessons, booking a three‑session package might offer better value.
  3. Practise at home: Supplement formal lessons with home practice. Review videos of your lessons and rehearse in a similar space to the venue to build muscle memory.
  4. Keep it simple: A heartfelt, well‑executed waltz or rumba can be more memorable than a complicated routine. Simple dances require fewer lessons and less choreographic work.
  5. Ask about travel fees: If a teacher will travel to your home, confirm whether travel costs are included or extra. It might be cheaper to visit the studio, especially if you live outside central London.
  6. Consider group classes: If budget is tight, join a group dance class to learn basic steps and rhythm before refining your routine with a couple of private sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How much do wedding dance lessons cost in London? The average cost of a personalised first dance lesson is about £60 per session. Total packages typically range from £200 to £500, but more elaborate routines can cost up to £1,178.

How many lessons should we book? For a basic routine, one to two sessions may suffice. Most couples book three to six sessions to achieve a polished routine and feel confident on the day. The more complex your choreography, the more lessons you’ll need.

When should we start our lessons? Begin lessons at least two to three months before your wedding. This allows ample time to learn the routine and practise between sessions. If your wedding is sooner, intensive packages can help you prepare quickly.

Do we need dance experience? No prior experience is necessary. Teachers specialise in working with complete beginners and will tailor lessons to your comfort level.

Can we choose our own song? Absolutely. Your instructor will build the choreography around your chosen song and can offer suggestions if you’re undecided. It’s important that the routine suits your personalities and feels natural.

Do we need special shoes or attire? Wear comfortable shoes similar to those you plan to wear on the day. Practising in wedding shoes during final sessions helps you get used to the height and feel. Avoid extremely loose or restrictive clothing that might inhibit movement.

What if we’re short on time? Some studios offer last‑minute packages consisting of one or two intensive sessions. While you may not perfect a complex routine, you’ll still learn enough to feel confident and avoid awkward shuffling.

Cost Breakdown of Wedding Dance Lessons in London: What Couples Should Expect to Pay

When couples search for wedding dance lessons near me, one of the first questions they ask is simple:

How much does it actually cost?

The price of wedding dance choreography in London varies depending on location, instructor experience, lesson type, and how complex your wedding first dance will be.

Below is a transparent breakdown of what you should realistically expect.

1. Average Cost of Wedding Dance Lessons in London

In Central London, private first dance lessons typically range between:

  • £75–£120 per hour
  • Premium Mayfair locations may exceed £130 per hour
  • Outer London studios may range from £60–£85 per hour

Prices depend on:

  • Studio rental costs
  • Instructor experience
  • Demand
  • Whether choreography is fully customised

Couples looking for structured, personalised coaching often choose
https://firstdancelondon.co.uk/first-dance-lessons-in-central-london-mayfair/
because premium locations offer privacy, professional space, and experienced instructors specialising in wedding dance choreography.

2. How Many Lessons Do Most Couples Need?

Total cost depends less on hourly rate and more on how many sessions you require.

Typical breakdown:

  • 3–4 sessions → £225–£480 total
  • 5–7 sessions → £375–£840 total
  • 8–10 sessions → £600–£1,200 total

For most couples, 5–7 first dance lessons create a confident, polished wedding first dance without unnecessary complexity.

If your wedding is close, you may need more concentrated sessions.

3. What Influences the Total Price?

A. Complexity of Choreography

Simple romantic routines cost less in total because they require fewer sessions.

Advanced routines with lifts, tempo changes, or mashups increase preparation time.

B. Song Choice

Some first dance song ideas are technically harder to choreograph due to:

  • Irregular tempo
  • Frequent pauses
  • Complex rhythm shifts

The more complicated the music, the more choreography time required.

4. Private Lessons vs Group Wedding Dance Classes Near Me

Group wedding dance classes near me often cost:

  • £20–£40 per person per session

However, these are not personalised.

Private wedding dance lessons cost more per hour but often require fewer sessions because progress is faster.

When comparing cost, consider value per result, not just price per session.

5. Hidden Costs Couples Often Forget

Many couples overlook:

  • Extra studio hire for final rehearsal
  • Venue walk-through practice
  • Travel fees if requesting off-site sessions
  • Emergency last-minute sessions

Working with experienced instructors through
https://firstdancelondon.co.uk/
helps prevent unexpected add-ons because pricing structures are typically clear from the beginning.

6. Is Expensive Always Better?

Not necessarily.

Higher price may reflect:

  • Central London studio rental
  • Instructor competition experience
  • Premium location convenience

Lower prices may still offer excellent coaching.

The real factor to evaluate is:

  • Experience specifically in wedding first dance choreography
  • Number of wedding couples coached
  • Ability to adapt to beginners

According to UK wedding industry reports from Hitched UK:
https://www.hitched.co.uk/wedding-planning/budget/how-much-does-a-wedding-cost/

Couples are increasingly allocating budget towards experience-based services rather than decorative extras.

Your wedding first dance is a once-only experience.

7. Budgeting Realistically for Your Wedding First Dance

If your total wedding budget is £20,000–£30,000, allocating:

£400–£800 towards structured first dance lessons is proportionate to the importance of the moment.

For context, wedding photographers in London often cost:
https://www.guidesforbrides.co.uk/wedding-ideas/wedding-photography-cost

Your first dance is photographed and filmed from multiple angles. It becomes permanent visual memory.

Preparation often costs less than 3% of total wedding budget.

8. Cost vs Confidence

The true cost question is not just financial.

It is:

  • Do you want to feel prepared?
  • Do you want to avoid awkward movement?
  • Do you want a structured routine?

Good wedding dance choreography reduces stress significantly.

Couples who invest early in structured first dance lessons often report:

  • Less wedding-day anxiety
  • Greater enjoyment of the moment
  • More natural performance

9. Final Thoughts: What Should You Expect to Pay?

For most London couples:

Expect to spend between £400–£900 total for professional, personalised wedding dance choreography.

More if you want advanced routines.

Less if you keep it simple.

The key is not chasing the cheapest option but finding experienced instructors who specialise specifically in wedding first dance preparation.

Because confidence is not accidental.

It is rehearsed.

How to Prepare for Your Wedding First Dance in 8 Weeks: A Realistic Timeline for Couples in London

If you are planning your wedding first dance and wondering how early you should start, the answer depends on preparation structure.

Many couples search for wedding dance lessons near me only 3–4 weeks before their wedding. While this can work, a structured 8-week plan creates significantly better results.

Below is a realistic breakdown of how professional wedding dance choreography is developed over two months.

Week 1–2: Song Selection and Movement Foundations

The first stage of wedding first dance preparation is choosing the right track.

When considering first dance song ideas, think about:

  • Tempo consistency
  • Clear musical phrasing
  • Emotional tone
  • Length

Avoid songs that constantly change rhythm or have unpredictable tempo shifts.

If you need inspiration, curated wedding playlists from platforms like Spotify can help:
https://open.spotify.com/genre/wedding

Or explore trending first dance songs through wedding publications such as:
https://www.brides.com/first-dance-songs-5090289

Once the song is selected, the focus shifts to:

  • Posture and connection
  • Basic timing
  • Lead and follow structure

This is the foundation of effective wedding dance choreography.

Couples starting in Central London often choose structured sessions at
https://firstdancelondon.co.uk/first-dance-lessons-in-central-london-mayfair/
because early technical guidance prevents long-term mistakes.

Week 3–4: Building First Dance Choreography Structure

This is where choreography truly begins.

Your wedding first dance routine should follow a structured format:

  1. Confident opening
  2. Smooth progression
  3. Highlight moment
  4. Clear ending pose

At this stage, couples typically master:

  • Rotational patterns
  • Controlled directional changes
  • Transitional timing
  • Natural hand positioning

Professional first dance lessons help ensure transitions flow rather than feel memorised.

This is also when couples searching for wedding dance classes near me realise that private coaching accelerates progress compared to group formats.

Week 5–6: Refinement and Confidence Development

By now, your wedding dance choreography should feel familiar.

The focus shifts from learning to polishing.

Key elements refined:

  • Eye contact and presence
  • Musical accents
  • Breathing control
  • Entrance and exit positioning

According to research from performance psychology experts at Harvard Health, repetition under calm conditions improves performance confidence:
https://www.health.harvard.edu/mind-and-mood/how-practice-builds-confidence

This applies directly to your wedding first dance.

Two focused practice sessions per week are more effective than one long rehearsal.

Week 7: Venue Awareness and Realistic Rehearsal

London wedding venues vary dramatically in size.

Before final rehearsals:

  • Measure approximate floor space
  • Practise in wedding shoes
  • Rehearse in slightly formal clothing

If your dance floor is compact, choreography should minimise large travelling movements.

Couples working with experienced instructors through
https://firstdancelondon.co.uk/
benefit from routines adapted to venue size and guest proximity.

This detail alone prevents awkward adjustments on the day.

Week 8: Final Run-Through and Mental Preparation

The final week is not about adding new moves.

It is about:

  • Running full routine twice without stopping
  • Cleaning transitions
  • Strengthening ending pose
  • Reducing overthinking

Most guests do not analyse footwork.

They notice:

  • Connection
  • Calmness
  • Natural expression

Well-designed wedding dance choreography prioritises emotional flow over complexity.

How Many First Dance Lessons Do You Actually Need?

For an 8-week plan:

  • 5–7 sessions create a polished routine
  • 8–10 sessions allow for advanced elements
  • 3–4 sessions create a simple structured dance

Couples starting early experience lower stress and higher confidence.

Those searching last minute for first dance lessons often require simplified choreography to ensure comfort.

Private Lessons vs Group Wedding Dance Classes Near Me

While group formats can provide general movement ideas, private sessions offer:

  • Personalised first dance choreography
  • Faster correction
  • Song-specific structure
  • Flexible scheduling
  • Venue adaptation

For a moment as important as your wedding first dance, individualised structure usually delivers stronger results.

Common Mistakes When Couples Start Too Late

When preparation begins 2–3 weeks before the wedding, couples often:

  • Choose overly complex songs
  • Attempt lifts without rehearsal
  • Forget to practise in wedding shoes
  • Panic and over-rehearse

An 8-week preparation timeline eliminates these issues.

Final Thoughts

Your wedding first dance should feel calm, confident, and natural.

With a structured 8-week plan, personalised wedding dance choreography, and consistent first dance lessons, you walk into your reception knowing exactly what to do.

Preparation creates confidence.

Confidence creates connection.

Connection creates the moment your guests will remember.

Newly married couple sharing a romantic first dance under warm lighting

Wedding Dance Choreography in London: How to Create a First Dance That Feels Effortless

Your wedding first dance is one of the most photographed and emotionally charged moments of your entire day. Yet when couples search for wedding dance lessons near me, most are not looking for something dramatic or theatrical. They want to feel natural. Confident. Connected. The truth is this: great wedding dance choreography is not about complexity. It is about structure, flow, and emotional timing.

Below is exactly how professional first dance choreography is built and how you can approach yours the right way.

What Wedding Dance Choreography Actually Means

Many couples assume choreography means memorising long sequences.

In reality, effective wedding dance choreography includes:

• A strong opening position
• Controlled transitions
• Musical phrasing alignment
• A clean ending
• Emotional pacing

When done correctly, your routine looks effortless because it is structured properly underneath.

This is why personalised first dance lessons make such a difference compared to generic wedding dance classes near me.

Step 1: Choosing the Right First Dance Song

Before choreography begins, music defines everything.

When couples ask about first dance song ideas, we guide them through three key filters:

  1. Tempo – Is it too fast for beginners?
  2. Structure – Does it have clear musical phrases?
  3. Emotional tone – Does it reflect your relationship?

Popular romantic songs are not always easy to choreograph. A technically simple song with clear rhythm often creates a more polished result.

If you are unsure, test walking in time to your song. If you cannot comfortably step to it, the choreography will feel forced.

Step 2: Matching Style to Personality

The most common styles for a wedding first dance in London include:

• Romantic slow waltz-inspired flow
• Foxtrot-based elegance
• Rumba-inspired connection
• Contemporary smooth movement
• Soft Latin styling

Your choreography should reflect who you are, not just what looks impressive online.

A calm couple rarely feels comfortable performing a dramatic show routine. The best wedding dance choreography amplifies personality, not replaces it.

Step 3: Structuring the Routine Properly

Strong first dance choreography follows a clear structure:

Opening (0–20 seconds)

Simple, confident movement. This is where nerves are highest. Keep it controlled.

Development (middle section)

Add variation, directional changes, small turns, or dips depending on skill level.

Highlight Moment

One memorable element. This could be:
• A soft dip
• A lift (if appropriate)
• A rotational movement
• A tempo change

Ending

Clean finish. Intentional pose. Hold for applause.

Without structure, couples tend to repeat steps randomly, which looks uncertain.

Step 4: How Many First Dance Lessons Do You Really Need?

Couples frequently ask this during their first consultation.

Here is a realistic guide:

• 3–4 sessions: simple structured routine
• 5–7 sessions: polished choreography with variation
• 8+ sessions: detailed transitions and advanced elements

Consistency matters more than cramming. Weekly first dance lessons allow muscle memory to build naturally.

If your wedding is approaching quickly, simplified choreography is often stronger than rushed complexity.

Step 5: Avoiding Common Choreography Mistakes

After choreographing hundreds of wedding first dances, certain patterns appear repeatedly.

Common mistakes include:

• Choosing songs that are rhythmically inconsistent
• Trying to copy viral routines
• Adding lifts without preparation
• Ignoring venue size
• Leaving choreography too late

Your dance floor space in London venues can vary dramatically. Good choreography adapts to your venue dimensions.

Step 6: Practising the Right Way

Rehearsal should be structured.

Follow this simple framework:

• Practise full routine twice without stopping
• Then isolate transitions
• Then run full routine again
• Finish with clean ending repetition

Do not rehearse for hours. Short, focused sessions build better retention.

Two focused 15-minute practices per week are often more effective than one long session.

Step 7: What Guests Actually Notice

Guests do not analyse footwork.

They notice:

• Comfort
• Connection
• Facial expression
• Flow

This is why well-designed wedding dance choreography prioritises confidence over complexity.

Your wedding first dance should look natural because it feels natural.

Why Couples Choose Private Wedding Dance Lessons

When couples search wedding dance lessons near me, they often want reassurance.

Private coaching provides:

• Faster progress
• Personalised choreography
• Flexible scheduling
• Clear correction
• Adaptation to your song

Unlike group wedding dance classes near me, private sessions focus entirely on your music and timeline.

Final Thoughts: Make It Feel Like You

Your wedding first dance does not need to be dramatic.

It needs to feel authentic.

With structured wedding dance choreography, the right first dance song ideas, and focused first dance lessons, you can walk onto the dance floor feeling prepared rather than pressured.

Confidence comes from clarity.

And clarity comes from good choreography.

How Many Lessons Do You Need?

Couples often search for a wedding dance teacher near me because they want personal attention.

The Complete Guide to Wedding Dance Lessons in London: From First Step to Confident First Dance

Professional wedding dance lessons in London help couples transform nerves into confidence through structured wedding dance choreography, personalised guidance, and realistic preparation timelines. Whether you are complete beginners or want a fully choreographed routine, focused first dance lessons ensure that your wedding first dance feels natural, relaxed, and memorable.

Why Wedding Dance Lessons Matter More Than Couples Expect

When couples search for:

  • wedding dance lessons near me
  • wedding dance classes near me
  • first dance lessons
  • wedding dance choreography
  • wedding first dance choreography

they are usually not looking to become dancers.

They are looking for reassurance.

After choreographing hundreds of wedding first dances in London, one pattern is clear:

Confidence does not come from talent.
It comes from structure.

What Professional Wedding Dance Lessons Actually Do

There is a misconception that wedding dance lessons are about memorising complex steps.

In reality, structured first dance lessons focus on:

  • Posture and positioning
  • Timing and rhythm
  • Comfortable leading and following
  • Clear transitions
  • A confident beginning and ending

This creates a calm, controlled experience rather than a performance.

The 5 Foundations of Strong Wedding Dance Choreography

1. Structure

Every successful wedding first dance includes:

  • A defined starting moment
  • One or two repeatable patterns
  • Controlled transitions
  • A clear ending

Without structure, awkward pauses appear.

With structure, movement flows naturally.

2. Song Compatibility

Many couples choose music based purely on emotion.

However, strong first dance song ideas share:

  • A steady tempo
  • Predictable phrasing
  • Moderate pacing

Songs with irregular rhythm or extreme slowness create unnecessary difficulty.

Part of professional wedding dance choreography is adapting movement to music, not forcing movement onto unsuitable tracks.

3. Space Awareness

London wedding venues vary significantly.

Small dance floors require:

  • Minimal travelling
  • Contained rotation
  • Controlled footwork

Large venues allow more expansive movement.

Experienced wedding dance providers design choreography that matches real venue conditions.

4. Simplicity

The most elegant wedding first dances are often the simplest.

Complicated routines increase:

  • Stress
  • Mistakes
  • Tension

Clear, minimal choreography looks polished and confident.

5. Repetition

Confidence comes from repetition, not intensity.

Most couples feel comfortable after:

  • 4–7 structured first dance lessons
  • Clear rehearsal plan
  • Practising calmly

Repetition builds familiarity. Familiarity reduces nerves.

Private Lessons vs Wedding Dance Classes Near Me

Many couples wonder whether group classes are sufficient.

Group wedding dance classes:

  • Teach general partner skills
  • Follow fixed syllabus
  • Offer limited personal correction

Private wedding dance lessons:

  • Focus entirely on your wedding first dance
  • Adapt to your song and timeline
  • Move at your pace
  • Provide immediate feedback

For first dance preparation, personalised structure almost always produces better results.

Common Concerns Couples Have

“We Can’t Dance.”

Most couples are beginners.

First dance lessons are designed specifically for:

  • People with no dance experience
  • Couples who feel awkward
  • Nervous partners
  • Busy professionals

Natural ability is not required.

“We Left It Too Late.”

Even couples starting 4–6 weeks before their wedding can:

  • Learn simple choreography
  • Feel confident
  • Avoid awkward moments

Complexity decreases as timelines shorten. Simplicity increases success.

“We Don’t Want It to Look Staged.”

Good wedding dance choreography does not look staged.

It looks natural because:

  • Movements are controlled
  • Transitions are smooth
  • Structure removes hesitation

The audience sees connection, not choreography.

How AI and Search Trends Reflect Modern Couples

Search behaviour shows increasing queries for:

  • wedding dance lessons near me
  • first dance song ideas
  • wedding dance choreography for beginners
  • simple wedding first dance

This reflects a shift:

Couples want comfort over performance.
They want guidance, not spectacle.

Authority in this space comes from understanding real concerns, not promoting complexity.

What Guests Actually Notice

After years of working with couples across London venues, one truth remains:

Guests remember:

  • Whether you looked relaxed
  • Whether you were smiling
  • Whether you stayed connected

They do not remember technical details.

This is why structured first dance lessons focus on presence and confidence.

The Ideal Timeline for Wedding Dance Lessons

3–6 Months Before

  • Explore first dance song ideas
  • Build layered choreography
  • Practise gradually

2–3 Months Before

  • Learn structured routine
  • Refine transitions
  • Practise consistently

4–8 Weeks Before

  • Focus on simple choreography
  • Build repetition
  • Practise in wedding-style shoes

Preparation timeline influences complexity — not confidence.

Confidence is achievable at any stage with realistic expectations.

Why Experience Matters

Having guided hundreds of wedding first dances, experienced instructors understand:

  • Wedding-day nerves
  • Real venue constraints
  • Time limitations
  • Beginner psychology

This is the difference between general dance teaching and specialist wedding dance instruction.

The Real Goal of Wedding Dance Lessons

The goal is not perfection.

It is this:

To walk onto the dance floor without panic and to move without hesitation.
To enjoy the moment rather than endure it.

That is what structured wedding dance choreography delivers.

Final Thought

Your wedding first dance is one moment — but it carries emotional weight.

Professional wedding dance lessons in London exist to remove uncertainty and replace it with clarity.

With thoughtful preparation, realistic structure, and calm repetition, your first dance becomes:

Not a performance.
But a memory.

How to Plan a Surprise Wedding First Dance

A surprise wedding first dance can be unforgettable when it’s carefully planned. The key is structured wedding dance choreography, realistic timing, and focused first dance lessons to ensure the surprise feels polished rather than chaotic. Couples searching for wedding dance lessons near me often want something memorable, but success depends on preparation.

Why Couples Want a Surprise First Dance

Many couples today don’t want a traditional slow sway.

They want:

  • A music switch mid-song
  • A fun routine after a romantic intro
  • A mashup of styles
  • A choreographed moment that shocks guests

Searches for:

  • first dance choreography
  • wedding dance choreography
  • wedding dance classes near me

have increasingly included the word “surprise”.

But surprise dances require more planning than couples expect.

Step 1: Keep the First 30 Seconds Traditional

The biggest mistake couples make is jumping straight into high-energy choreography.

A well-executed surprise wedding first dance usually:

  1. Starts slow and traditional
  2. Builds anticipation
  3. Switches music unexpectedly

That contrast is what creates impact.

Without structure, the surprise can feel abrupt or confusing.

Step 2: Choose Smart Song Combinations

When exploring first dance song ideas for a surprise routine:

Good combinations include:

  • Romantic ballad → upbeat pop
  • Classic slow song → Latin rhythm
  • Acoustic intro → dance remix

Avoid:

  • Two songs with similar tempo
  • Abrupt genre changes with no musical bridge

Smooth editing makes choreography easier and reduces stress during first dance lessons.

Step 3: Keep the Choreography Manageable

Many couples assume surprise equals complex.

In reality, good wedding dance choreography for a surprise routine includes:

  • Strong opening poses
  • Clean transitions
  • Repeatable high-energy movements
  • Clear finishing position

Complex footwork increases the chance of mistakes.

Confidence creates impact, not difficulty.

Step 4: Start Lessons Earlier Than You Think

For a traditional wedding first dance, 4–6 lessons may be enough.

For a surprise routine, allow:

  • 6–10 structured first dance lessons
  • Extra time for transitions
  • Practice with music edits

Couples searching for wedding dance lessons near me often underestimate the time needed for surprise choreography.

Step 5: Consider Your Venue Space

London wedding venues often have:

  • Small dance floors
  • Guests standing close
  • Limited space for travelling moves

Surprise routines must be adapted to real venue size.

Large travelling choreography may look impressive online but feel cramped in reality.

Personalised wedding dance choreography always accounts for floor dimensions.

Step 6: Practise the Music Switch

The most vulnerable moment in a surprise first dance is the music transition.

You should know:

  • Exactly when it changes
  • Who cues the DJ
  • What movement happens immediately after

Structured first dance lessons rehearse this moment repeatedly so it feels automatic.

Step 7: Plan the Ending Carefully

Surprise routines often end awkwardly.

Always decide:

  • Do guests join after?
  • Do you pose dramatically?
  • Does the DJ continue the upbeat song?

A clear ending avoids confusion.

When a Surprise Dance Works Best

A surprise wedding first dance works well if:

  • You’re comfortable performing
  • You enjoy rehearsing
  • You have enough time
  • You want a high-energy reception start

It may not suit couples who feel extremely nervous or dislike memorising choreography.

What Guests Remember Most

After years of choreographing surprise wedding first dances, one thing stands out:

Guests remember:

  • The music switch moment
  • Your energy
  • Your confidence

They do not evaluate technical precision.

Preparation ensures the surprise feels polished, not chaotic.

Final Thought

A surprise wedding first dance can be one of the most memorable parts of your reception.

But spontaneity on the day requires structured preparation beforehand.

With well-planned wedding dance choreography, focused first dance lessons, and realistic expectations, your surprise routine can feel exciting, confident, and seamless.

The Complete Timeline for Planning Your Wedding First Dance (From 6 Months to 1 Week Before)

The ideal time to start planning your wedding first dance is 3–6 months before your wedding. However, even couples who begin 4–6 weeks before the big day can still feel confident with structured first dance lessons and simple wedding dance choreography. The key is matching your timeline to realistic expectations.

Why Timing Matters More Than Talent

When couples search for:

  • wedding dance lessons near me
  • first dance lessons
  • wedding dance classes near me
  • wedding dance choreography

they usually ask the same question:

“When should we start?”

Having choreographed hundreds of wedding first dances, we’ve seen that confidence is far more about preparation timeline than natural ability.

Below is a realistic planning guide.

6 Months Before the Wedding

Ideal For: Couples who want something slightly more detailed

If you start this early, you can:

  • Explore different first dance song ideas
  • Experiment with styles
  • Build layered first dance choreography
  • Practise gradually without pressure

This timeline allows for:

  • Comfortable learning pace
  • Flexibility if you change your mind
  • Strong muscle memory by the wedding day

You do not need weekly lessons for six months. Spacing sessions every few weeks works well.

3–4 Months Before the Wedding

Ideal For: Most couples

This is the most common timeline for booking wedding dance lessons near me.

At this stage you can:

  • Finalise your song
  • Learn structured wedding dance choreography
  • Practise consistently
  • Feel calm and prepared

Most couples feel confident after 4–7 focused first dance lessons within this timeframe.

This is a comfortable and realistic starting point.

6–8 Weeks Before the Wedding

Ideal For: Busy couples who delayed planning

This is still absolutely workable.

At this stage, focus on:

  • Simplicity
  • Clear structure
  • Repeatable patterns
  • A confident ending

You may not need elaborate choreography. Simple first dance choreography often looks more elegant and relaxed anyway.

Couples searching for wedding dance classes near me at this point should prioritise private, focused sessions rather than general group classes.

2–4 Weeks Before the Wedding

Ideal For: Last-minute planners

We’ve choreographed many wedding first dances within this window.

The approach becomes:

  • Choose a dance-friendly song
  • Keep choreography minimal
  • Practise calm repetition
  • Focus on posture and timing

At this stage, clarity matters more than complexity.

Even 2–3 structured first dance lessons can dramatically improve confidence.

1 Week Before the Wedding

Ideal For: Final polishing only

In the final week:

  • Do not add new movements
  • Practise in wedding-style shoes
  • Rehearse calmly
  • Keep sessions short

Over-practising increases tension.

Confidence comes from familiarity, not intensity.

How to Choose the Right Song at the Right Time

Song choice impacts your timeline.

If you’re starting late, avoid:

  • Songs with irregular tempo
  • Very slow ballads
  • Live acoustic versions with timing changes

If you’re starting early, you have more freedom to explore creative first dance song ideas.

The right song reduces lesson time significantly.

How Many Lessons Do Couples Really Need?

Based on experience:

  • 6 months timeline → 5–8 lessons spaced comfortably
  • 3–4 months → 4–7 lessons
  • 6–8 weeks → 3–5 focused sessions
  • 2–4 weeks → 2–4 highly structured lessons

These are averages. Simpler choreography reduces lesson count.

What Guests Actually Notice

Regardless of timeline, guests remember:

  • How relaxed you look
  • Whether you’re smiling
  • The emotional connection

They do not measure step difficulty.

The goal of wedding dance choreography is calm confidence, not performance pressure.

Final Thought

Your wedding first dance does not require perfection.
It requires preparation aligned with your timeline.

Whether you start six months early or six weeks before the wedding, structured first dance lessons can transform nerves into confidence.

Couples searching for wedding dance lessons near me are usually looking for reassurance. The truth is simple:

Start when you can.
Keep it structured.
Keep it simple.

And your wedding first dance will feel natural and memorable.

How to Make Your Wedding First Dance Look Effortless (Even If You’re Beginners)

Your wedding first dance can look effortless even if you’ve never danced before. The key is simple, structured wedding dance choreography, the right song choice, and focused first dance lessons tailored to your comfort level. Couples searching for wedding dance lessons near me often discover that simplicity creates the most confident and natural results.

Why Couples Want an “Effortless” First Dance

When couples search for:

  • wedding dance lessons near me
  • wedding dance classes near me
  • first dance lessons
  • wedding first dance choreography

they rarely say, “We want something complicated.”

They say:

“We just want it to look natural.”

Having choreographed hundreds of wedding first dances, we’ve learned that what looks effortless is usually built on clear structure underneath.

What Makes a First Dance Look Natural

An effortless-looking wedding first dance usually includes:

  • A clear starting position
  • Two or three repeatable movements
  • Simple transitions
  • A confident ending

It does not require:

  • Complex lifts
  • Long memorised sequences
  • Performance-style routines

Good first dance choreography focuses on flow, not difficulty.

The Role of Wedding Dance Choreography

Some couples worry that choreography will make the dance look staged.

In reality, thoughtful wedding dance choreography does the opposite.

It:

  • Removes awkward pauses
  • Prevents confusion
  • Keeps movement smooth
  • Helps both partners feel secure

The audience doesn’t see choreography. They see confidence.

Why Song Choice Matters More Than You Think

Many couples searching for first dance song ideas focus only on lyrics.

But the rhythm and structure of the song are equally important.

Dance-friendly songs usually have:

  • A steady tempo
  • Clear phrasing
  • Predictable sections

If you can sway comfortably without rushing, it’s likely a good option for your wedding first dance.

The right song reduces the number of first dance lessons you’ll need.

How First Dance Lessons Build Confidence

In professional first dance lessons, we focus on:

  • How to stand comfortably
  • How to move together naturally
  • How to lead and follow simply
  • How to recover smoothly if something goes wrong

Most couples searching for wedding dance lessons near me are beginners. Confidence builds quickly when structure is clear and expectations are realistic.

Common Mistakes That Make a Dance Look Forced

From experience, these are the most common issues:

  • Trying to copy complex online dances
  • Choosing a difficult song without guidance
  • Over-rehearsing without structure
  • Adding too many movements

Effortless dances are usually the simplest ones.

How Many Lessons Do You Actually Need?

For a confident wedding first dance, most couples feel comfortable after:

  • 4–7 structured first dance lessons
  • Clear guidance on timing
  • Practising calmly between sessions

The goal is not perfection. It’s familiarity.

When couples look for wedding dance classes near me, what they really need is personalised attention rather than general group instruction.

Why Simplicity Looks Elegant

The most memorable wedding first dances we’ve guided were:

  • Calm
  • Structured
  • Connected

Guests remember:

  • Eye contact
  • Relaxed movement
  • Emotional presence

They do not remember step sequences.

That’s why focused wedding dance choreography is about clarity, not complexity.

Final Thought

An effortless wedding first dance isn’t accidental.
It’s built on simple, thoughtful structure.

With the right first dance lessons and realistic expectations, your wedding first dance can feel natural, relaxed, and genuinely enjoyable.

That’s exactly what professional wedding dance lessons near me are designed to deliver — confidence without pressure.

Should You Take Wedding Dance Lessons Before Choosing Your First Dance Song?

Yes, many couples benefit from taking at least one wedding dance lesson before finalising their first dance song. Testing movement with guidance from an experienced instructor can help you avoid choosing music that is difficult to dance to. Couples booking wedding dance lessons in London often discover that small song adjustments make a significant difference in confidence and comfort.

Why Song Choice Causes So Much Stress

When couples search for:

  • wedding dance lessons london
  • wedding first dance lessons
  • wedding dance choreography

they often already have a song in mind.

The problem?

A meaningful song is not always a dance-friendly song.

We’ve worked with hundreds of couples who loved their music emotionally but struggled with timing, rhythm, or structure once they tried to move to it.

What Makes a Song Hard to Dance To?

Some common issues include:

  • Irregular tempo
  • Long instrumental intros
  • Sudden rhythm changes
  • Extremely slow pacing
  • Live versions with inconsistent timing

These musical elements can make even simple movement feel complicated.

This is why many couples benefit from testing their song in a professional setting before committing.

What Happens When You Test Your Song in a Lesson

During early wedding first dance lessons, we typically:

  • Play your chosen song
  • Observe natural movement
  • Identify clear sections
  • Suggest structure ideas

Sometimes, we confirm the song works perfectly.

Other times, we recommend:

  • Shortening the track
  • Editing the intro
  • Switching to an acoustic version
  • Adjusting tempo slightly

These small refinements often transform the experience completely.

Why Couples Change Their Song After One Lesson

It’s more common than people expect.

Once couples begin to move, they realise:

  • The tempo feels rushed
  • The rhythm feels unclear
  • The song feels longer than expected

Trying movement early removes guesswork.

From an SEO perspective, couples searching “best first dance songs” are often looking for reassurance that their choice will actually work on the dance floor.

That reassurance usually comes from experience, not guesswork.

The Emotional Side of Song Choice

Music is personal.

Many couples choose songs because:

  • It played during a meaningful moment
  • It reflects their relationship
  • It feels romantic

The good news is that most songs can work with the right structure.

The goal of professional wedding dance lessons in London is not to change your song — it is to make it work for you.

When It’s Better to Decide First

Some couples prefer to finalise their song before starting lessons.

That can work well if:

  • The song has a clear, steady rhythm
  • It is mid-tempo
  • You feel comfortable swaying naturally

If you can move together comfortably without overthinking timing, it is likely a good choice.

When It’s Better to Test First

Testing first may be helpful if:

  • You are unsure between several songs
  • Your song has tempo changes
  • You have limited time before the wedding
  • You feel nervous about dancing

One structured lesson can provide clarity quickly.

How This Affects Your Timeline

Choosing the right song early can:

  • Reduce the number of lessons needed
  • Simplify choreography
  • Increase confidence faster

In our experience, couples who test their song early often feel more relaxed throughout the preparation process.

Final Thought

Your first dance song sets the mood, but it should also support your movement.

Taking a wedding dance lesson before committing fully can remove uncertainty and prevent unnecessary stress.

That’s one of the reasons couples choose professional wedding dance lessons in London — not just to learn steps, but to make confident decisions from the start.

What to Wear to Your Wedding Dance Lessons

You don’t need formal wedding attire for your dance lessons, but what you wear can significantly affect how comfortable and confident you feel. For couples taking wedding dance lessons in London, the ideal clothing is comfortable, easy to move in, and similar in feel to what you’ll wear on the wedding day — especially shoes for final practice sessions.

Why Clothing Matters More Than Couples Expect

One of the most common questions we hear when couples book wedding first dance lessons is:

“What should we wear to the lesson?”

Many assume it doesn’t matter. In reality, clothing can affect:

  • Balance
  • Movement range
  • Comfort
  • Confidence

After choreographing hundreds of wedding first dances, we’ve seen how the right clothing makes learning smoother and more enjoyable.

What to Wear to Early Wedding Dance Lessons

For your first few lessons, focus on comfort and flexibility.

For both partners:

  • Comfortable, breathable clothing
  • Items that allow full movement
  • Avoid restrictive fabrics

Think:

  • Activewear
  • Casual clothing
  • Comfortable layers

There is no need for formalwear at the beginning.

The Importance of Shoes

Shoes are one of the most important factors in wedding dance lessons.

Early lessons:

  • Flat, supportive shoes
  • Smooth soles if possible
  • Avoid heavy trainers with thick grip

Very grippy shoes can make turning harder and increase strain on the knees.

Practising in Wedding Shoes

We always recommend practising at least once in shoes similar to those you’ll wear on the wedding day.

For example:

  • Brides should try similar heel height
  • Grooms should practise in formal dress shoes

Why?

Because:

  • Heel height affects posture
  • Shoe material affects turning
  • Comfort affects confidence

Even one session in wedding-style shoes can prevent surprises on the day.

What About Wedding Dresses and Suits?

You don’t need to rehearse in full attire, but consider:

  • Practising in a skirt with similar length
  • Wearing a jacket briefly if you’ll wear one
  • Testing movement with any restrictive elements

Many brides discover that certain movements need adjusting once they account for dress shape.

This is why personalised wedding dance choreography matters.

Common Clothing Mistakes

From experience, these are the most common issues we see:

  • Wearing very tight clothing
  • Practising only in trainers, then switching to heels
  • Ignoring how slippery the wedding venue floor might be
  • Wearing shoes too early before feeling comfortable

Gradual adjustment works best.

How Clothing Affects Confidence

Confidence during your first dance doesn’t come from complicated steps.
It comes from feeling comfortable in your body.

When clothing and shoes feel right:

  • Movement becomes smoother
  • Balance improves
  • Nerves reduce

This is especially important for couples learning to dance for the first time.

Final Thought

You don’t need anything elaborate for your wedding dance lessons.
You need clothing that allows you to move freely and feel comfortable.

As experienced providers of wedding dance lessons in London, we guide couples through practical preparation so nothing feels unexpected on the wedding day.

Small details, like what you wear, make a big difference.

Do You Need Private Wedding Dance Lessons or Group Classes?

Most couples preparing for their first dance choose private wedding dance lessons rather than group classes. Private lessons allow personalised choreography, flexible scheduling, and focused attention — especially important for couples searching for wedding dance lessons in London who want confidence quickly and efficiently.

Why Couples Ask This Question

When couples start searching for:

  • wedding dance lessons london
  • wedding first dance lessons
  • wedding dance classes near me

they often wonder whether group classes might be easier or more affordable.

Having worked with hundreds of couples, we’ve seen that while group classes can be helpful for general dancing, they are rarely ideal for first dance preparation.

The Main Difference Between Private and Group Lessons

Group Classes

Group classes usually:

  • Follow a set syllabus
  • Move at a fixed pace
  • Teach general partner dancing
  • Offer limited personal feedback

They are excellent for:

  • Social dancing
  • Learning basic ballroom or Latin steps
  • Meeting other couples

But they are not tailored to your wedding song, venue, or timeline.

Private Wedding Dance Lessons

Private lessons focus entirely on:

  • Your chosen song
  • Your comfort level
  • Your wedding timeline
  • Your venue size

As wedding dance providers, we customise every session to the couple in front of us. This makes progress faster and removes unnecessary stress.

Why Private Lessons Work Better for First Dances

1. Personalised Choreography

Every couple moves differently.

Private lessons allow us to:

  • Adjust choreography to suit you
  • Simplify movements if needed
  • Add detail if you feel confident

This flexibility is essential for effective wedding dance choreography.

2. Faster Progress

Because the lesson is fully focused on you:

  • Mistakes are corrected immediately
  • Structure is built efficiently
  • Confidence grows quickly

Most couples taking private wedding dance lessons in London feel comfortable within 4–7 sessions.

3. Reduced Pressure

In group classes:

  • You may feel self-conscious
  • You move at someone else’s pace
  • There’s less opportunity for questions

Private sessions create a calm, supportive environment — especially important for nervous couples.

When Group Classes Might Make Sense

Group classes may suit couples who:

  • Have plenty of time before the wedding
  • Want to learn general dance skills
  • Are comfortable practising independently

However, most couples preparing specifically for their first dance benefit more from personalised guidance.

What We’ve Learned from Experience

After choreographing hundreds of wedding first dances, one pattern is consistent:

Couples who choose private lessons:

  • Feel more prepared
  • Stress less about timing
  • Enjoy the process more

Because the dance is tailored to them, it feels natural rather than forced.

Cost vs Value

While private lessons may appear more expensive per session, they often require fewer sessions overall because progress is focused and efficient.

In the long term, they tend to be more cost-effective for first dance preparation.

Final Thought

Your first dance is not a general dance class.
It’s a personal moment that deserves focused preparation.

That’s why most couples preparing for their wedding choose private wedding dance lessons in London — to ensure their first dance feels confident, structured, and truly their own.

What Actually Happens in Your First Wedding Dance Lesson?

In your first wedding dance lesson, you don’t learn a full routine straight away. Instead, you focus on posture, timing, simple movement, and understanding how to move comfortably together. As experienced providers of wedding dance lessons in London, we guide couples step-by-step so they leave the first session feeling calmer and more confident than when they arrived.

Why couples feel nervous before the first lesson

When couples book wedding first dance lessons, they often arrive saying:

  • “We’ve never danced before.”
  • “We’re worried we’ll look awkward.”
  • “We don’t know where to start.”

Having worked with hundreds of couples, we can confidently say that these nerves are completely normal.

The first lesson is designed to remove pressure, not add to it.

Step 1: Understanding your song

The first thing we usually do is look at your chosen song.

We:

  • Check the tempo
  • Identify natural sections
  • Decide where the dance could start and finish

If the song is challenging, we may suggest small adjustments or edits. This prevents future frustration and makes the process smoother.

Song choice directly affects how easy your wedding dance choreography will feel.

Step 2: Learning how to stand and hold each other

Before any steps, we focus on positioning.

This includes:

  • Comfortable hand placement
  • Natural posture
  • Relaxed connection

Many couples are surprised how much confidence comes from simply knowing how to stand properly together.

This foundation makes everything else easier.

Step 3: Simple movement patterns

In most first lessons, we introduce:

  • Gentle weight shifts
  • Basic turning patterns
  • Easy transitions

Nothing complicated.

The goal is not to impress anyone.
The goal is to make movement feel natural.

This is especially important for couples who are learning to dance for the first time.

Step 4: Building structure

Even in the first lesson, we usually begin forming a simple structure.

This might include:

  • A clear starting moment
  • One repeatable movement
  • A confident ending position

Structure reduces anxiety because you know what comes next.

What couples usually feel after the first lesson

Almost every couple says some version of:

“That was much easier than we expected.”

The biggest shift we see is not technical improvement.
It’s emotional relief.

Once couples realise:

  • They don’t need complicated choreography
  • They don’t need to be natural dancers
  • They won’t look awkward

Confidence starts building quickly.

How many lessons follow the first one?

After the first session, we assess:

  • How quickly you pick things up
  • How complex your song is
  • What kind of dance you want

Most couples taking wedding dance lessons in London feel comfortable after 4–7 sessions, but that varies.

The first lesson is about clarity.
The following lessons build consistency.

Common misconceptions about the first lesson

From experience, couples often assume:

  • They need to memorise everything immediately
  • They will look uncomfortable
  • The instructor will expect perfection

None of this is true.

A good first lesson should feel:

  • Supportive
  • Structured
  • Calm

That’s exactly how we approach it.

Final thought

Your first wedding dance lesson is not about performance.
It’s about removing uncertainty.

Having guided hundreds of couples through their first session, we know that once you understand the basics, everything becomes manageable.

That’s the purpose of professional wedding dance lessons in London — to turn nerves into confidence, step by step.

Should You Have a Choreographed First Dance or Keep It Natural?

Most couples taking wedding dance lessons in London wonder whether they should fully choreograph their first dance or keep it simple and natural. The truth is, there is no single “right” choice. A structured dance often builds confidence, while a natural approach can feel relaxed and authentic. The best option depends on your personality, timeline, and comfort level.

Why couples struggle with this decision

When couples book wedding first dance lessons, one of the first questions they ask us is:

“Do we need choreography, or can we just move naturally?”

Many worry that choreography will:

  • Feel too rehearsed
  • Look staged
  • Add pressure

Others worry that keeping it natural will:

  • Look awkward
  • Feel unprepared
  • Lack structure

Having choreographed hundreds of wedding first dances, we’ve seen both approaches work beautifully — when chosen for the right reasons.

What a choreographed first dance really means

Choreography doesn’t mean complicated steps or theatrical routines.

In reality, most wedding dance choreography includes:

  • A clear beginning
  • One or two structured patterns
  • Simple transitions
  • A confident ending

Structure creates clarity. And clarity creates confidence.

For many couples, especially beginners, this structure reduces anxiety significantly.

What “keeping it natural” actually involves

A natural first dance still benefits from guidance.

It usually includes:

  • Understanding timing
  • Learning how to move together comfortably
  • Knowing how to start and finish

Even couples who want something relaxed often discover they feel safer with light structure underneath.

How we guide couples through this choice

In our experience as wedding dance providers, the decision depends on:

1. Personality

  • Confident, outgoing couples may enjoy light choreography.
  • Shy couples often prefer structured simplicity.
  • Couples who dislike memorising steps may prefer minimal choreography.

2. Timeline

  • Short timelines favour simple, repeatable patterns.
  • Longer timelines allow for more detailed choreography if desired.

3. Song choice

Some songs naturally lend themselves to structured choreography.
Others feel better with gentle, flowing movement.

During wedding dance lessons in London, we often test movement in the first session to see what feels right.

Why structure often looks more natural

One surprising thing we’ve learned after choreographing hundreds of first dances:

The dances that look the most “natural” usually have structure underneath.

Why?
Because when couples:

  • Know what comes next
  • Feel secure in transitions
  • Understand timing

They relax. And relaxation is what guests notice most.

When full choreography makes sense

Full choreography may be ideal if:

  • You love the idea of a special highlight moment
  • You’re confident movers
  • You have time to rehearse
  • You want a slightly more dynamic performance

Even then, simplicity usually works best.

When minimal choreography works best

Minimal structure works well if:

  • You’re nervous
  • You don’t enjoy memorising steps
  • You prefer connection over performance
  • You have limited time

Many of the most emotional and memorable first dances we’ve guided were beautifully simple.

What guests actually remember

After years of wedding dance lessons and real weddings, one thing is consistent:

Guests remember:

  • How you looked at each other
  • Whether you seemed relaxed
  • The emotional atmosphere

They do not remember step sequences.

Final thought

Whether you choose a choreographed first dance or something more natural, the goal is the same:
To feel confident, connected, and comfortable.

That’s exactly what professional wedding dance lessons in London are designed to support.

The right choice is the one that makes you feel calm on the day.

First Dance Tips for Grooms Who Think They Can’t Dance

Many grooms worry about the first dance because they believe they “can’t dance”. As wedding dance providers, we’ve worked with hundreds of grooms who felt exactly the same, and most of them end up feeling confident and comfortable on the dance floor. The key is keeping the dance simple, structured, and natural, especially during wedding dance lessons in London where time and space are often limited.

Why grooms often feel more pressure than they admit

In our experience, grooms tend to:

  • Worry about leading incorrectly
  • Feel awkward being watched
  • Fear making mistakes in front of guests
  • Compare themselves to confident dancers

Many grooms tell us:

“I’m happy to do it, I just don’t want to look stupid.”

This is one of the most common reasons couples book wedding first dance lessons.

Our experience working with nervous grooms

Having choreographed hundreds of wedding first dances, we can say with certainty that grooms who feel unsure at the start often make the biggest progress.

Why?
Because they are:

  • Focused on getting it right
  • Open to clear guidance
  • Motivated to support their partner

As wedding dance providers, our job is to remove pressure and give grooms a clear role they feel comfortable with.

What grooms actually need to focus on

Good first dances do not require complicated steps.

For grooms, confidence usually comes from:

  • Knowing where to stand
  • Understanding how to lead simply
  • Staying in time with the music
  • Knowing what to do if something goes wrong

This is exactly what wedding dance lessons focus on from the first session.

Why simple leadership looks confident

One of the biggest misconceptions is that the groom needs to “perform”.

In reality:

  • Clear, calm movement looks confident
  • Simple leading feels natural
  • Over-thinking creates tension

Many of the best first dances we’ve choreographed were built around just a few repeated movements that allowed the groom to relax.

How wedding dance lessons help grooms feel at ease

In lessons, we focus on:

  • Easy leading techniques
  • Comfortable hand positions
  • Minimal footwork
  • Clear structure

This allows grooms to concentrate on their partner instead of worrying about steps.

For grooms learning to dance for the first time, this approach makes a huge difference.

Common mistakes grooms make

From experience, the most common mistakes are:

  • Trying to memorise too much
  • Watching complex dances online
  • Assuming mistakes will be obvious
  • Rushing movements when nervous

Wedding dance lessons are designed to prevent these issues before they happen.

How many lessons do grooms usually need?

Based on our experience:

  • Most grooms feel comfortable after 2–4 lessons
  • Confidence improves quickly with repetition
  • Simplicity reduces nerves

Even one focused lesson can change how a groom feels about the first dance.

What guests actually notice

Guests do not analyse footwork.

They notice:

  • Eye contact
  • Calm movement
  • Connection between the couple

When the groom feels relaxed, the whole dance feels more natural.

Final thought

If you’re a groom who thinks you can’t dance, you’re not alone.
We’ve helped hundreds of grooms feel confident enough to enjoy their first dance rather than fear it.

Can You Prepare a First Dance in Just a Few Weeks? A Realistic Guide for Last-Minute Weddings

Yes, you can absolutely prepare a confident and enjoyable first dance in just a few weeks. As professional wedding dance providers, we have choreographed hundreds of wedding first dances at the last minute, especially for couples booking wedding dance lessons in London close to their wedding date. The key is focusing on simplicity, structure, and confidence, not complex choreography.

Why so many couples leave their first dance until the last minute

From our experience working with couples every week, leaving the first dance until late is extremely common.

Most couples:

  • Prioritise venues, catering, and guests first
  • Have demanding work schedules
  • Assume the first dance will “just happen”

We often hear:

“We didn’t think we’d have time for lessons.”

In reality, many couples only start searching for First dance lessons two to four weeks before their wedding.

Our experience with last-minute wedding dances

As wedding dance specialists, we have choreographed hundreds of first dances with very little time.

Some couples come to us:

  • Two weeks before the wedding
  • One week before the wedding
  • Even days before the wedding

What we’ve learned is simple:
A last-minute first dance does not need to look basic or rushed. It just needs the right structure.

What actually matters when time is limited

When couples come to us last minute, we immediately shift focus.

Instead of complicated choreography, we prioritise:

  • Knowing exactly how to start the dance
  • Feeling comfortable holding each other
  • Staying in time with the music
  • Ending the dance confidently

This approach is why last-minute wedding dance lessons are often more effective than couples expect.

What a realistic timeline looks like

3–4 weeks before the wedding

This is one of the most common scenarios we see.

In this timeframe, most couples can:

  • Learn a simple but elegant structure
  • Build confidence with their song
  • Feel relaxed rather than stressed

With the right guidance, this is more than enough time.

1–2 weeks before the wedding

Even at this stage, a first dance is still very achievable.

We usually focus on:

  • Calm, contained movement
  • Very clear structure
  • Repetition rather than learning new steps

Our goal is always confidence, not performance.

Song choice becomes even more important

With limited time, song choice can make or break the experience.

From choreographing hundreds of last-minute first dances, we know that:

  • Slower songs are easier
  • Songs with a steady rhythm reduce pressure
  • Edited versions often help

In many cases, small adjustments to the song make everything easier.

What last-minute choreography really looks like

Last-minute choreography is often:

  • Simpler
  • More natural
  • More comfortable

Rather than memorising steps, couples learn:

  • How to move together
  • Where to stand
  • How to transition smoothly

This is why guests often say last-minute first dances look relaxed and genuine.

Common mistakes couples make under time pressure

The biggest mistakes we see are:

  • Trying to copy complex dances online
  • Choosing difficult songs
  • Expecting perfection
  • Overthinking every movement

From experience, simplicity always wins.

How many lessons do last-minute couples usually need?

Based on our experience:

  • Most last-minute couples feel confident after 2–4 focused lessons
  • Some need only one strong session to feel reassured
  • Clarity matters more than quantity

A clear plan from the first lesson makes all the difference.

Final thought

A last-minute wedding does not mean a stressful or awkward first dance.

Having choreographed hundreds of last-minute wedding first dances, we know that with the right approach, couples can feel confident, connected, and relaxed on the day.

That’s exactly what professional wedding dance lessons in London are designed to provide, even when time is short.

How to Prepare Your First Dance for a Small Wedding Venue in London

If your wedding venue in London has a small dance floor, your first dance should be simple, compact, and well-structured. Couples preparing for wedding dance lessons in London often need choreography that works in tight spaces, avoids large travelling movements, and still feels confident and natural in front of guests.

Why small venues change how your first dance should look

Many London wedding venues have:

  • Limited dance floor space
  • Guests standing close
  • Tables near the floor
  • Irregular room layouts

Couples often worry:

“What if we don’t have space to move properly?”

The good news is that a great first dance does not require a big floor. It requires clarity and control.

The biggest mistake couples make with small dance floors

The most common mistake is planning choreography that:

  • Travels too much
  • Includes big spins or lunges
  • Requires constant movement around the room

On a small floor, this creates:

  • Stress
  • Awkward adjustments
  • Loss of confidence

This is why wedding dance lessons for London venues focus on contained movement.

What works best for small wedding dance floors

1. Central, grounded movement

Staying mostly in one place allows couples to:

  • Feel stable
  • Maintain connection
  • Avoid obstacles

Simple weight shifts, gentle turns, and clear positioning look far more confident than big movements in tight spaces.

2. Clear structure over choreography

Structure matters more than steps.

A good small-space first dance usually has:

  • A clear beginning
  • One or two repeatable patterns
  • A confident ending

This helps couples feel calm even if nerves appear.

3. Minimal travelling steps

Instead of moving across the floor, choreography should:

  • Rotate gently
  • Use small directional changes
  • Keep feet close to the body

This is especially helpful for couples learning to dance for the first time.

Song choice matters even more in small spaces

In tight venues:

  • Slower songs are easier
  • Songs with a steady rhythm reduce rushing
  • Overly fast songs make movement feel cramped

This is why many couples taking wedding first dance lessons adjust their song choice once they consider venue size.

What wedding dance lessons focus on for small venues

When preparing couples for small London venues, lessons focus on:

  • Awareness of space
  • Clean transitions
  • Calm pacing
  • How to recover if something goes wrong

This builds confidence, not performance pressure.

Real experience from London weddings

Many couples tell us:

“We thought it would look boring without big moves.”

In reality, guests respond more to:

  • Connection
  • Eye contact
  • Ease

A confident, simple first dance almost always looks better than complex choreography squeezed into a small area.

How many lessons do couples need for small-space dances?

Interestingly, small-space choreography often requires:

  • Fewer steps
  • Less memorisation
  • More repetition

This means couples often feel ready sooner, even if they’ve never danced before.

Practical tips before your first dance

If your venue has a small floor:

  • Practise in a confined space at home
  • Avoid choreography videos online
  • Focus on posture and timing
  • Trust simplicity

A good wedding dance instructor will always adapt choreography to the venue, not the other way around.

Final thought

A small dance floor does not limit your first dance.
It clarifies it.

With the right preparation, your first dance can feel relaxed, confident, and memorable, even in the most intimate London venues.

That’s exactly what professional wedding dance lessons in London are designed to support.

The Most Popular Dance Styles for Wedding Dance Lessons in London

The most popular dance styles for wedding dance lessons in London are slow romantic styles, modern freestyle, ballroom-inspired dances, and relaxed upbeat routines. Most couples choose a style based on how confident they feel, the type of song they love, and the size of their wedding venue rather than formal dance rules.

This is exactly what we see every week when couples search for wedding dance lessons in London.

Why couples ask about wedding dance styles

When couples look for:

  • wedding dance lessons london
  • wedding first dance lessons
  • wedding dance choreography

they often ask:

  • “What style should we do?”
  • “Do we need ballroom?”
  • “What looks natural if we can’t dance?”

The good news is that modern wedding dance lessons are not about strict styles. They are about choosing a style that suits you.

1. Slow Romantic First Dance (Most Popular)

Why it’s so popular

This is the most common choice for wedding dance lessons in London.

It works well because:

  • It suits slow, emotional songs
  • It feels intimate and natural
  • It doesn’t require dance experience
  • It works in small venues

What it looks like

  • Gentle swaying
  • Simple turns
  • Natural movement
  • Focus on connection, not steps

This style is ideal for couples who want their first dance to feel calm, romantic, and meaningful.

2. Modern Freestyle Wedding Dance

Why London couples love it

Modern freestyle is extremely popular with couples who:

  • Don’t like traditional ballroom
  • Want something relaxed
  • Want the dance to feel “like them”

This style is common in private wedding dance lessons, especially for younger couples or non-dancers.

What it looks like

  • Walking patterns
  • Natural turns
  • Subtle lifts or dips (optional)
  • Easy transitions

Freestyle choreography adapts easily to:

  • Any song
  • Any tempo
  • Any dance floor size

3. Ballroom-Inspired First Dance (Without the Pressure)

Why couples still choose it

Many couples think ballroom is intimidating. In reality, most wedding dance lessons use ballroom inspiration, not strict ballroom technique.

This style works well for:

  • Waltz-style songs
  • Classic romantic music
  • Couples who like structure

What it actually involves

  • Simple frame
  • Clear lead and follow
  • Smooth movement
  • No complicated footwork

It looks elegant without feeling like a performance.

4. Upbeat and Fun First Dance Styles

When this works best

Some couples want energy rather than romance.

This style is popular when:

  • The song is upbeat
  • The couple is naturally playful
  • The wedding has a relaxed vibe

What to keep in mind

Upbeat styles:

  • Need slightly more coordination
  • Work best with shorter dances
  • Should still feel comfortable

In wedding dance lessons, upbeat routines are usually simplified so they stay fun, not stressful.

5. Mixed or Transition Styles (Very Common in London)

Why couples choose this

Many London couples choose to:

  • Start slow and romantic
  • Transition into something upbeat
  • Keep the dance under 2 minutes

This works well when couples want:

  • Emotional impact
  • A surprise moment
  • Flexibility

Mixed styles are planned carefully in wedding dance choreography so they feel smooth, not rushed.

How to choose the right dance style for you

1. Your confidence level

If you’ve never danced before, simpler styles work best.

Confidence matters more than complexity.

2. Your song choice

Your song often determines the style naturally:

  • Slow songs → romantic or ballroom-inspired
  • Modern songs → freestyle
  • Fast songs → upbeat or mixed styles

3. Your venue

Wedding dance lessons in London often account for:

  • Small dance floors
  • Limited space
  • Guests standing close

This is why big travelling movements are usually avoided.

4. Your timeline

If you have limited time:

  • Simple styles are best
  • Freestyle adapts quickly
  • Structure matters more than steps

What wedding dance lessons actually focus on

Regardless of style, professional wedding dance lessons focus on:

  • Feeling comfortable together
  • Knowing where to stand
  • Knowing how to start and finish
  • Recovering if something goes wrong

Style is secondary to confidence.

Real experience from wedding dance lessons in London

Most couples come in unsure about style.

After the first lesson, they usually realise:

  • The style chooses itself
  • Simpler often looks better
  • Feeling relaxed matters most

This is why trial lessons are so helpful.

Common mistakes couples make

  • Choosing a style that looks good online but feels awkward
  • Copying viral dances without adapting them
  • Overcomplicating the choreography
  • Ignoring venue size

A good wedding dance choreographer will always simplify.

Final thoughts

There is no “best” wedding dance style.

The best style is the one that:

  • Feels natural to you
  • Fits your song
  • Fits your venue
  • Fits your timeline

That’s exactly what modern wedding dance lessons in London are designed to help you find.

What Happens in Your First Wedding Dance Lesson?

Your first wedding dance lesson is relaxed, practical, and confidence-focused. You won’t be asked to perform, memorise complicated steps, or “dance properly”. Instead, the lesson is designed to help you feel comfortable moving together, understand your song, and leave with a clear plan for your first dance.

This is exactly what couples expect when they book wedding dance lessons in London for the first time.

Why couples worry before their first wedding dance lesson

Most couples searching for:

  • wedding dance lessons london

  • wedding first dance lessons

  • learn to dance for wedding

  • are nervous before their first session.

Common thoughts we hear:

  • “We’ve never danced before”

  • “We’re going to feel awkward”

  • “What if we can’t do it?”

  • “Do we need to know steps already?”

These worries are completely normal. A good first wedding dance lesson is designed specifically to remove them, not reinforce them.

What the first wedding dance lesson is really about

Your first lesson is not about choreography.

It is about:

  • Getting comfortable together

  • Understanding how your bodies move naturally

  • Building confidence early

  • Creating clarity, not pressure

Think of it as a guided introduction rather than a performance rehearsal.

Step by step: what happens during the lesson

1. A short conversation before you dance

Every first wedding dance lesson starts with a conversation.

You’ll talk about:

  • Your wedding date

  • Your song (if you’ve chosen one)

  • Your experience level

  • How confident or nervous you feel

  • What you want your first dance to feel like

This helps the teacher adapt the lesson to you, rather than forcing a generic approach.

2. Moving together without pressure

You’ll then start moving gently to music.

This usually involves:

  • Simple walking

  • Holding each other comfortably

  • Feeling the rhythm of the song

  • Learning how to start and stop together

There is no expectation to look polished at this stage. The goal is comfort and connection.

3. Understanding your song

If you’ve chosen your song, the teacher will help you:

  • Understand the tempo

  • Identify natural moments in the music

  • Learn where movements can change

  • See how structure makes dancing easier

This is where many couples realise dancing is more logical than they expected.

4. Learning a simple structure

Rather than teaching lots of steps, the focus is on structure.

You might learn:

  • How to begin your first dance

  • A simple pattern you can repeat

  • How to turn without feeling lost

  • How to finish confidently

This structure becomes the foundation for all future wedding dance lessons.

5. A clear plan going forward

Before the lesson ends, you’ll leave knowing:

  • Roughly how many lessons you may need

  • What the next lesson will focus on

  • Whether choreography is needed or not

  • How to practise at home (if at all)

This clarity is what most couples value the most.

What you are NOT expected to do

This is important to understand.

During your first wedding dance lesson, you are not expected to:

  • Perform in front of others

  • Have rhythm already

  • Be confident immediately

  • Know anything about dancing

Wedding dance lessons are designed for beginners. Most couples start from zero.

How this differs from dance classes

Many couples worry their lesson will feel like a class.

Private wedding dance lessons are very different from:

  • Group dance classes

  • Ballroom courses

  • Fitness-style sessions

In private lessons:

  • Everything is adapted to you

  • The pace is yours

  • There is no comparison

  • The focus is your wedding, not technique

This is why couples searching for wedding dance classes near me often prefer private lessons once they try them.

Real experience from wedding dance lessons in London

London couples often arrive:

  • Straight from work

  • Tired

  • Overstimulated

  • Short on time

A good teacher understands this and keeps the first lesson:

  • Calm

  • Focused

  • Efficient

  • Supportive

Many couples tell us after the first lesson:

“That was much easier than we expected.”

That shift in mindset is exactly what the first lesson is meant to achieve.

Common mistakes couples make before their first lesson

From experience, the most common mistakes are:

  • Watching too many YouTube videos beforehand

  • Choosing an extremely difficult song

  • Expecting instant perfection

  • Comparing themselves to viral wedding dances

Your first lesson works best when you arrive open-minded and honest about how you feel.

How to prepare for your first wedding dance lesson

You don’t need to prepare much.

Helpful things to do:

  • Bring your song if you have one

  • Wear comfortable shoes

  • Arrive with realistic expectations

  • Be open about nerves or concerns

That’s it.

Your song makes a big difference.

  • Slow or mid-tempo songs usually require fewer lessons

  • Songs with tempo changes or strong beats may need more structure

  • Longer songs often require clearer choreography to avoid repetition

A professional teacher will adjust the choreography to suit the song, not the other way around.

3. How Confident You Want to Feel

Some couples are happy with a simple sway and a few turns. Others want to feel completely relaxed and secure.

As a guideline:

  • 3–4 lessons build familiarity

  • 5–7 lessons build confidence

  • 8–10 lessons build polish and calmness

Confidence comes from repetition, not complexity.

Wedding Dance Lessons in London: The Complete Guide for Engaged Couples

Planning your wedding comes with hundreds of decisions, and your first dance is one of the most personal moments of the day. For many couples, wedding dance lessons in London are not about performing a perfect routine. They are about feeling confident, relaxed, and genuinely enjoying the moment together.

This guide explains exactly how wedding dance lessons work, how many you need, where they take place, and how to choose the right option for you.

What Are Wedding Dance Lessons?

Wedding dance lessons are private or semi-private dance lessons designed by our expert instructors to help couples prepare for their first dance. Unlike regular dance classes, these lessons focus entirely on your song, your ability level, and your wedding timeline.

Most couples booking wedding dance lessons in London:

  • Have little or no dance experience

  • Feel nervous about being watched

  • Want something elegant but simple

  • Do not want a “Strictly Come Dancing” routine

Why Couples Choose Wedding Dance Lessons in London

London couples often face a few specific challenges:

  • Busy schedules

  • Limited time before the wedding

  • Small dance floors at venues

  • Performance anxiety

Private wedding dance lessons solve these problems by keeping everything tailored and efficient. You learn only what you need, at a pace that feels comfortable, without pressure.

Do You Need Dance Experience?

No. Most couples starting first dance lessons in London have never danced before.

A good instructor will:

  • Start with simple walking patterns

  • Focus on posture and connection

  • Teach movements that look natural, not forced

  • Adapt everything to your comfort level

If you can walk together and listen to music, you can learn a wedding dance.

How Many Wedding Dance Lessons Do You Need?

This is the most common question couples ask.

As a general guideline we recommend:

  • 3–4 lessons: Very simple routine, slow song, minimal movement

  • 5–7 lessons: Most popular option for confident, smooth choreography

  • 8–10 lessons: More detailed routine, faster songs, or complete beginners who want extra confidence

Your song choice, musical timing, and how relaxed you want to feel all influence the number of lessons but generally your instructor will be able to tell you more precisely once they see you at the Trial Lesson. This lesson is a free, no commitment lesson that helps to give you a more clear vision about your dance.  We work with hundreds of couples every year, so we’ll be able to assess your needs easily.

Wedding Dance Choreography vs Simple Guidance

Not every couple needs full choreography, in fact most couples that come to us tell us they want just a few simple steps that make them look relaxed and that they can dance easily on the big day.

Simple guidance is ideal if:

  • You want a natural, romantic feel

  • Your song is slow or mid-tempo

  • You prefer minimal structure

Wedding dance choreography works best if:

  • You want a clear beginning, middle, and end

  • Your song changes tempo

  • You want a few memorable moments without stress

Wedding dance choreography in London is usually subtle, elegant, and designed for real wedding venues, not stages.

Where Do Wedding Dance Lessons Take Place in London?

Most lessons happen in:

  • Private dance studios in Central London

  • Easily accessible locations near major transport links

  • Occasionally at home or at the venue, depending on availability

Private studios are preferred because they offer:

  • Privacy

  • Proper flooring

  • Space to practice safely

  • No distractions

What Happens in a Typical Lesson?

A standard private lesson includes:

  1. A brief chat on what the goals are for the day and answering any questions that might arise whilst practicing at home
  2. Either a warm-up going through the previous learned steps or polishing on the most prevalent mistakes
  3. Learning new movements or refining

  4. Practising transitions between steps

  5. Working on musical timing

  6. Repeating the routine until it feels natural

There is no pressure to “get it right” immediately. Progress builds quickly when lessons are structured properly.

What If You Feel Nervous or Self-Conscious?

This is completely normal.

Most couples feel awkward in the first lesson. A professional instructor will:

  • Keep the environment relaxed

  • Avoid overwhelming instructions

  • Focus on what looks good naturally on you

  • Build confidence gradually

By the final lesson, most couples are surprised by how comfortable they feel.

How to Choose the Right Wedding Dance Lessons in London

When choosing a studio or instructor, look for:

  • Experience specifically with wedding couples

  • 1:1 lessons rather than group classes

  • Clear guidance on lesson numbers

  • Flexible scheduling

  • Honest advice, not pressure

Avoid places that push complex routines or make you feel rushed.

Wedding dance lessons in London are designed to support you, not overwhelm you. Whether you want a simple sway or a gently choreographed routine, the right lessons will help you enjoy your first dance instead of worrying about it.

If you want personalised guidance, private sessions, and choreography built around you, start with a free trial lesson and take it one step at a time.

Mastering Rhythm: The Key to Achieving the Perfect Wedding Dance

Welcome to our wedding dance school, where we believe that dancing is not just about movement; it’s about mastering rhythm. Your wedding dance should be a magical experience that captures the essence of your love story. In this blog post, we’ll delve into the significance of rhythm in achieving the perfect dance and offer tips on how to make it shine on your special day.

How to ease your first dance nerves?

How to ease your first dance nerves?

What you can do to feel better on the day

It’s almost impossible to come across a person that doesn’t get nervous before dancing their first dance. Nerves are natural, and dealing with and embracing those nerves can be difficult! Here are a few tips to help you manage the inevitable pre-first dance jitters:

Move around a little bit before the first dance

We know it’s difficult to sit still when you are nervous! It will help if you move around a little bit just before the big moment. By moving you will release the tension in your muscles and get the body ready for movement.

Visualize yourself dancing your choreography.

Take that moment just before you are ready to dance to visualise your choreography , your step sequence and really focus on the order of the steps. This will make your mind more sharp and ready to go.

Take deep breaths.

Also referred to as centered breathing, taking slow deep breaths helps slow your heart rate and control your nerves. One deep breathing technique is the 4x4x4x4; breathe in through your nose for 4 seconds, hold it in for 4 seconds, breathe out through your mouth for 4 seconds and hold at the end of the breath for 4 seconds. Following a pattern as such will lessen the effects of your nerves and help you feel calm!

Don’t over practice!

If you had your choreography done with First Dance London, you already should have practiced a lot. We make sure that you are ready to dance your best on the big day. So over practicing won’t make much of a difference. The important thing is to trust the process and to know that whatever happens, you did enough practice and you’ll do great. We recommend to go through your choreography once or twice on the day just to make sure everything is right.

Everyone is different, so what works for you, might not work for others. The important aspect is to enjoy the day and have fun. And remember, you’re surrounded by your loved ones and this is your day. Let’s DANCE!

Wedding Dance Choreography vs Just Learning Steps

WEDDING DANCE

Choreography vs Just Learning Steps

Now this is a question we’re being asked on a regular basis. Almost every couple that has a lesson with us, is wondering wether to have a first dance choreography made on the song of their choice, or just to learn a few steps that they can then put together spontaneously on the day.  This article is meant to answer this question as best as possible, so let’s dive straight in.

Choreography - Pros. and Cons.

Having a choreography done by a professional dance teacher make a choreography for you has it’s good and I wouldn’t say not so good, but stressful aspects. The pro here is that your dance instructor will focus on the song and tailoring the steps so that they fit the lyrics and the nuances of the song. This helps the dance overall enormously because for example during the chorus you can have a fancier move and it will be for sure be timed perfectly with the song, thus looking very good and making you look like you actually know how to dance like a pro.

On the other hand, having a choreography can be a bit stressful, especially for men as they’re usually more rigid dancers. If you know you aren’t good at memorising or if during the lessons you feel overwhelmed by the number of steps or order, just ask your teacher to help you find a better alternative.

Learning Steps - Pros. and Cons.

Learning steps that fit your song choice isn’t that hard as it first seems. Your dance instructor will explain you the rhythm you will need to follow and make sure you understand everything there is to know about the song. Usually this happens on the30 Minutes FREE Trial Lesson. They will explain how to count and stay on the beat and then you can learn the steps. with enough practice you will be able to dance smoothly on your big day and feel absolutely great. But what’s the hard part here?

The hard part is the lead and follow. Usually in Ballroom Dancing the two parts of a couple are the leader and the follower. The leader is usually the man and the lady is the follower. If we’re talking about a same sex couple, the role will be mutually agreed. The leader will have therefore a certain posture and has to follow certain principles in order to signal to the follower what will the next step be and the follower has to be sensitive to the lead, in order to respond appropriately. This is a learned skill and it’s doable with the right guidance from a teacher, but it takes a bit of practice to get used to each others bodies and steps, maybe a few more dance lessons, but practice is key.

Our Conclusion

Of course in this case there isn’t a right answer for everyone, but we recommend generally to have a choreography made if you have less time on your hands as it’s an easier option. If you are confident on your dancing skills( you can also consult with your teacher on this), then give it a go and try to learn a few steps and put them together in a nice way. Also the teacher will advise you on what figures go best where in the song so, for example, you can have one or two figures that you keep for the chorus part and maybe one for the end. This way you have a perfect mix of both choreography and spontaneous steps.

Online Wedding Dance Lessons – Dance safely at Home

ONLINE DANCE LESSONS

Dance safely at home guided by the best

During these uncertain times, we understand that everyone is postponing or changing their wedding plans. These are definitely unprecedented times, but we say, keep your hopes up, we will get through this together.

We are here to help you achieve your first dance goals and for that, we moved our lessons online. If you have a bit of spare space at home, First Dance London will get you dancing in no time. Even though we aren’t able to have you in our studios because we must respect the government’s guidelines, us and our teachers are still able to access the studios in order to teach online dance lessons.

We are very flexible in organising your dance lessons, so we can start dancing online and eventually, after the restrictions are lifted, we can meet face to face in a safe environments in one of our studios.

So how do we manage online dance lessons?

Firstly, we will need to chat with you, and get a bit more information about your vision and from there we can choreograph your dance. For that, we will have the Free 30 Minutes Trial Lesson. Details like size of the floor, dress and how you want your dance to look, coordinated with your wedding theme, are one of the most important to us.

After the initial lesson, you can book the remaining lessons directly with your teacher, or by e-mail at contact@firstdancelondon.co.uk.

On each lesson, your teacher will take you step by step through the choreography, explaining both the male and female steps. This way, even if you aren’t in the studio with the teacher, you will be able to understand each step easily. After making sure that you understand the step, you will be able to practice together on the music.  We will guide you to perfect each move and make sure you are comfortable with them and relaxed when you dance as it would be second nature.

Whatever your song choice, we are able to choreograph the perfect dance for you, taking into consideration every aspect of your wedding and your dance ability and the end product will be a first dance to be remembered for the rest of your life.  This is our guarantee.

Match your First Dance to your Wedding Style

MATCH YOUR FIRST DANCE

WITH YOUR WEDDING STYLE

Through the years we’ve had many couples wanting their first dance to be in tune with their wedding style. We find this aspect very important and not only your first dance should match your wedding style, but it should match your personality and reflect your story. That’s why we’ve put together a few ideas to help you decide what dance style you want to perform for your first dance. Let’s start with the wedding types.

Traditional Wedding - Waltz and Tango

For a traditional wedding reception we usually recommend a more traditional dance style, like English Waltz, Tango or Viennese Waltz. The reason we recommend this is that these dance styles are usually slower paced and thus easier for any wedding dress. Of course you can opt for any dance style you want and we are here only to advise and also it depends on your song choice, but generally couples that tend to go for a traditional wedding, are also inclined to chose a more romantic and slower dance.

Rustic Wedding - Swing or Blues

Rustic weddings are fun and full of vintage relaxing colours. We had quite a few couples opting for a rustic wedding and most of them like a more relaxed dance in which they don’t necessarily think about posture and steps that much. The important thing is to have fun. So then most of them will ask us to choreograph some appropriate steps for their song and teach them how to lead and follow and they’ll do the rest, alternating and chasing the order, resulting in a spontaneous fun filled dance.  Other great choices for a rustic wedding dance are Swing or Blues where the steps can be easily alternated to create the choreography.

Industrial Wedding - Waltz, Foxtrot

Industrial weddings tend to have a minimalist style, geometric shapes and soft lighting. This is why we would recommend a slow romantic dance. Similar to a traditional wedding but with less accent on the steps and figures and more accent on the connection in the couple. We always advise our couples to act natural and dance how they feel and this is why a Slow Waltz or a Foxtrot might be the best choice here. Again it is very important to mention that you should chose your song first without necessarily thinking if it fits the wedding theme because we can help you with that. There’s  more than one way to dance to a song.

Beach Wedding - Salsa - Latin

Definitely one of our favourite types, beach weddings are all about being on that sunny party wedding vibe. For a beach wedding we would recommend a fun but passionate dance like salsa or merengue. For sure go for a summer dance where you can show off your hip movement. You can dance bare feet if the reception is on the beach so even more to enjoy.

Garden - Outdoor Wedding

This type of wedding can range from smart casual dress code to formal, so the options are plenty. We recommend picking the song first here as a starting point and then based on that a dance teacher can advise you what dance style fits the song. Sometimes you can dance more than one dance style on the same song so your teacher will be able to show you some moves and you can chose. As an example, we recently choreographed a dance on Pharell’s Happy song and the guests were absolutely amazed. The couple entered the dancing space alongside a band playing the song, so you can be creative and add elements to your dance.

Fantasy Wedding - No limits

You don’t see many fantasy inspired weddings but when you see, you will also be amazed by the creativity and imagination and thought put into creating a wedding like this.  This is why we would advise on a special choreography with inspiration from your theme and usage of decor and props.  The sky’s the limit, or universe.

Wedding Dance – Pro Tips

Wedding Dance Pro Tips

Today’s article comes from a thought we had in mind for quite some time and is inspired from all the couples we worked with so far. We noticed that almost all the couples we have in our studio starting their wedding dance make at least 3 or 4 of these common mistakes. So here we gathered them in form of tips to keep in mind when starting your first dance lessons. The main reason for these is the fact that most of them are beginners so they might have some wrong notions about dancing or just excited to dance that they forget a few obvious things.

Posture - you can relax

One of the first topics we talk about when starting the first dance is the posture. Many people think that if you want to look good when dancing you need to have a very good and rigid posture. But that’s quite far from the truth. If you want to do a wedding dance which in the ballroom dance world is categorised as a social dance, you don’t need to have a stiff back with elbows high and robot like movements. Your arms around your partner need to feel comfortable and you can even hold each others waist and elbows can and should be dropped lower than the shoulders. The purpose of the dance is to be enjoyed, so having a stiff, uncomfortable posture, is not very enjoyable. Remember, you are not competing, you won’t be judged, so let’s have a bit of fun.

STEPS, Not Lunges

Another common mistake beginners do, is making steps very big. And again this is understandable because when you see dancers on TV they tend to make the steps bigger. But that is firstly because they are trained to do so and also their choreographies tend to cover much more space than a first dance choreography. The best advice we can give you is to make each step shoulder width. This way, your legs will stay always beneath your body and the body won’t need to move too much to compensate.

stay on the beat

This might not be very easy. Especially as a beginner, your ear is not trained to pick up every nuance in the music and how it changes. This is why on the very first lesson we make sure you understand the music and count and you can follow along while doing the steps. Once this is in place, you will find it actually helpful to practice to the music.

Act Natural

It’s important to us that you look natural when dancing. This is why  we need  to make sure this happens from the first lesson. Look at each other when you dance. When walking on the dance floor, hold hands and walk as you wold on a normal day. Take a breath or two before starting to dance, this will calm the nerves and help you focus on the steps.

Lose the Wedding Stress with First Dance Lessons

Lose the Wedding Stress with

First Dance Lessons

The first dance is a popular wedding tradition. It’s a great way to celebrate your love through dancing and also start the party. Being the groom and the bride everyone expects you to open the party and have a first dance before everyone else. Because a lot of couples don’t have almost any dance experience, they think that doing a first dance will be stressful, but when you actually do it you might find out it’s quite the opposite. The preparation of the wedding can be stressful indeed but having dance lessons during this time can help alleviate this. So how to get started with wedding dance lessons?

Hire a teacher

As we said before, most people are not trained dancers, so it will feel challenging trying to choreograph a first dance. Also dancing in front of an audience can be a seen scary to many.  This is where a teacher can help you put your ideas together and give them a shape on the dance floor. A teacher will guide you through the process from beginning to the end and help you decide on the song, steps, entrance, and many other elements you might otherwise neglect. We offer our clients a 30 minutes free trial lesson to speak with a teacher, go over the main details and even learn a few steps to get started. After that you can decide what’s the best option for you.

Chose a choreography that's perfect for you

When speaking about choreography we’re essentially speaking about a dance style that you like. Based on this style, your teacher will then build the choreography. Different styles have different levels of difficulty so based on the style you chose and the teacher advises you, it will take more or less time to perfect. If you want a mode classical style you can opt for a Viennese or English Waltz, if you want a more creative choreography that challenges you a bit, you can opt for salsa, bachata or even swing. Tango is another popular romantic dance style. Whatever style and song you chose, we can make it happen.

Start to practice

Once you have the initial lesson and you get a better idea of your dance, you can start practising the learned steps straight away. It will take a few lessons to have the choreography together but even before that you can start to practice after every lesson and make sure you remember what you did on the previous lesson. This will help you progress quicker and when you come next time you can enjoy it more. The more practice you get in, the more confident you’l feel if you enjoy it, might become a new hobby for the two of you.

We know this period might be a bit stressful but in the end you will have the wedding to enjoy and make the most out of it. First Dance London is here to help you make sure your first dance is the best in every way and you enjoy the process as much as the end product as well.

Ultimate Wedding Dance Guide | 10 Steps to Your Perfect First Dance

THE ULTIMATE WEDDING DANCE GUIDE

10 Steps to Your Perfect First Dance

If you’re reading this post, first of all thank you very much! Also this means you’re getting ready for your big day and you want everything to be perfect. One of those things being your first dance. Probably you don’t know that much about the first dance and this is where our help comes in. We want you to have a great first dance so we’ve put together our 20 + years of dance experience to help you achieve it. In this article you will be able to find every aspect relating to your first dance and preparation to that moment, including ideas related to music , dress, shoes and how much it takes for a normal person with no dance experience to get there and feel comfortable dancing. So without further ado, let’s get started!

1.Understand your final goal

The first thing that you want to think about when planning your first dance is having  a goal, an intention. What do you want to achieve with your first dance? Do you want to be able to just move freely on the dance floor and be relaxed with your partner? Do you want to go all in and learn a more challenging routine? Or maybe you want a group dance that you and your bridesmaids can perform. Whatever you decide on this, it is important to have this in mind and tell this to your dance teacher so they can help you achieve that

2. Decide on a feeling

Pick a feeling for your first dance. Wether you want your dance to be romantic, funky, fun, classic, this is an important aspect. Again your dance teacher will be able to help you with this therefore you need to tell her/him this. When you know what you’re going for, its easy for the teacher to recommend you moves or steps that fit your specific requirements.

Wedding couple dancing their first dance in black and white.

3. Pick Your Song

This is the part where couples spend either lots or very little time . Your song can be one that means something deeply for both of you, like the first song you danced together on , or the song you heard on your first date, or a song that symbolises your relationship. We definitely recommend to be something you both agree on , you both like and you both enjoy dancing on. This is your song so this is the most important aspect. Based on this, your teacher can recommend a certain dance style if it’s not obvious from the song. ( Songs like traditional waltz songs have a clear rhythm different from others or swing songs are more clear as well but more contemporary songs are not straightaway clear to an unexperienced dancer).

4. Dance experience

Based on our experience with newlywed couples , over 90% of them do not have previous dance experience/training. And that is absolutely fine. We are here to help you build a first dance that you will enjoy and feel comfortable dancing within a few lessons. As First Dance London teachers work mainly with unexperienced dancers, they have knowledge to build the choreographies for beginners and intermediate levels as well as advanced, so no matter your level, you will be able to dance and learn the steps easily in a few sessions.  We will show you the steps and even make videos for you to have an practice when not in the dance studio.

5. Get inspiration for choreography

A very useful step after choosing your song, is to have a look online to see what other couples dance on that song. This way you can find inspiration and see what you like and form a better opinion before actually starting to dance yourself. If you see something that you like but it feels bit too challenging, we can help you modify it to suit your ability, so don’t get in anyway discouraged. We can make it happen.

6. Know the venue

We take a few aspects of the venue into consideration when choreographing your first dance. Aspects like:

  1. Space on the dance floor;
  2. Your entrance. If you are on the dance floor already or you will come onto the dance floor when announced;
  3. How will the venue be arranged on the day;
  4. Where will the guests be seated, or if they will stand up around you;
  5. If you can make use of a feature of the room like stairs or a special set of doors etc.
  6. Also if the music will be played by a band or DJ.

7. Know when your dance needs to be ready

This is important for us and for you. For us because we want to book your lessons with enough space in between so you have time to practice relaxed. For you because you will have a very busy period a few weeks prior to the big day and you don’t necessarily want to be stressed by learning how to dance and perfect it. You want everything to be ready 2-3 weeks before your wedding. This way if anything unexpected happens, as they do… you will be able to deal with it. This means ideally starting to prepare your first dance a bout 2 to 3 months before the wedding.

8. Pick the right package of lessons

The reason we have this step towards the end of the list is pretty obvious. First you want to know as much as possible about your first dance, then take an informed decision, especially because it involves payment. This is why we recommend having the 30 minutes free trial lesson. If you’re not yet decided or don’t know everything before this, speaking to a professional will help you and then you will be able to make a better decision. The available options we have are the 5 and 10 lessons packages. Most of our clients prefer the 5 lessons if they go for a simple first dance. By simple I mean having only one song choreography which can be about 2-3 minutes long. If you chose to have a more elaborate dance, song 2 or 3 songs, we can do it in 5 lessons but it will be very rushed. We then recommend having the 10 lessons or the 5 lessons plus an extra 2 or 3 lessons.  This will give you enough time to have the choreography ready and plenty of time to practice supervised by a teacher.

9. Booking the lessons

When booking the lessons we recommend as mentioned before to have the 30 minutes free trial lesson and then go from there. After the initial session, you can book the rest of the lessons directly with your teacher or with Ana. The process is very easy. After sending us the information via our contact form, Ana will contact you via Email or WhatsApp to book the lessons. After the booking has been made, you will receive a final email with all the details of the location and services provided and we’ll see you in the studio.

10. Practice Practice Practice

I’ll say it here one more time: Practice makes perfect and that why we insist on you doing it. We recommend booking the lessons with a few days in between to give you enough time to practice before the next lesson. We also record a video of the learned steps so you can have it as a reference at home. This way, next time the teacher sees you, you can continue an improve on what you learned on the previous lesson.

In terms of practice gear, you can use whatever shoes are comfortable for you . As a man it won’t be a very big difference between trainers and dress shoes but as lady it might be. Therefore we recommend wearing something similar if not exactly your wedding shoes for at least a session, so you can get comfortable with dancing in them.

A good idea would be, if you can, to practice once on the actual dance floor as well. This will help you get your bearings so you don’t feel as nervous on the day.

That’s it from us! Hope the article was useful and e can’t wait to welcome you in our studios!

Leave us a comment if you have any questions and we’ll try to answer as best as we can.

5 Things to Avoid Doing at Your Wedding

5 THINGS TO AVOID DOING AT YOUR WEDDING

In this article we share with you some of the things to avoid doing/ avoid having at your wedding . Some might not seem that terrible but when you look at it from a different angle, it will actually be pretty obvious you shouldn’t try these things. As we are a company that provides first dance services,  most of these tips will be regarding dancing.  So let’s go straight… to number one!

1. OVER THE TOP FIRST DANCE

Try to avoid having an over complicated first dance. Especially if you’re a beginner and haven’t had any proper instruction. In these cases it’s better if you don’t go with the flow and you plan your first dance to be something that you can actually pull off. We’re not saying have a boring dance for sure. But try not to over complicate your day by adding lots of spins or acrobatic lifts and stunts, especially if you haven’t consulted with a professional first.  If you need any advice and training for your first dance, our team is here to help you achieve that in just a few lessons. We actually like having couples that push their limits a bit, but you have do it in a safe manner so that everyone can enjoy the party.

2. INDOOR FIREWORKS

We really do not recommend having fireworks indoors. If you can get away with having a few small torches here and there, it’s definitely clear that you shouldn’t try having fireworks indoors. apart from being disturbing to your guests, it can be properly dangerous if something lights up and suddenly firemen are involved in your wedding. If you really want fireworks during your first dance, have the dance outside and the fireworks in the background to compliment your moves.

3. HIRE A NON PROFESSIONAL DJ

We can’t stress this enough. You need someone that can play your first dance song and all the other songs as a matter of fact, with out any interruptions. Things should go smoothly all the way. If you have to stop in the middle of the dance like the couple below, your nerves will skyrocket and you will feel embarrassed. So hire someone that you know can do the job. Ask them for testimonials if they don’t already have them on their website. Just do this right. You worked so hard to plan your wedding and it would be a shame to have someone ruin it.

4. HAVING AN AWKWARD FIRST DANCE

Like the couple above, you don’t want to have a dance that says I’m boring. Not to say that it should be over complicated because we don’t want you to go to mistake no.1 . But we think a simple , tasteful first dance should include at least a few turns to show off the bride and maybe even a dip or two. It definitely should be romantic but also fun to dance and watch.

5. DRUNK GUESTS OUT OF CONTROL

As a last piece of advice, just don’t let this happen.. By any means, please don’ t let this happen. Or at least if it happens, send it to us so we can have some fun as well. Enjoy!

Any other things we should avoid at weddings? Please share your thoughts!

TOP 10 SALSA SONGS FOR YOUR FIRST DANCE

TOP 10 SALSA SONGS FOR YOUR FIRST DANCE

If you want your first dance to be Salsa, then you’re in the right place! We’ve put together a list of popular salsa songs for you to chose from. But first, let’s learn a little bit about Salsa.

Historically Salsa appeared in 1950 – 1960s New York. It was a mix of other popular dances of the time, such as cha cha, mambo and swing. These days New York Salsa has a distinctly Puerto Rican sound ‚ smooth, polished, classic salsa. It tends to follow the jazz structure, incorporating lengthy instrumental breaks to showcase the ability of particular musicians.

Cuban-style salsa, also known as Casino, is popular in many places around the world, including in Europe, Latin America, North America, and even in some countries in the Middle East. Dancing Casino is an expression of popular social culture;

Although salsa is still a popular social dance, it is generally overlooked when it comes to wedding first dances. However, this is a great style for couples looking to do something unexpected, romantic, and fun! Think you won’t be able to find a romantic salsa song? These are selected to be easy to follow and slow enough to feel comfortable dancing on them.  Click on the links below and listen to our selection. Enjoy!

8 Tips For a Perfect First Dance

8 Tips for a Perfect First Dance

Your big day is fast approaching but you don’t have a clear idea of what to do for your first dance? Don’t worry,  you are not alone. Close to 90% of the couples have little or no experience when it comes to their first dance. This is why we came up with this guide article to help you avoid the common mistakes and make the best choices. This is a list of advice we give to all our couples when they start their first dance with us. Hope you find it useful!

1. CHOOSE A SONG THAT'S EASY TO DANCE TO AND WEDDING APPROPRIATE

The most important thing when choosing your first dance song is to love it. You can’t dance on it if you’re half hearted. Thats why its important to make sure its the right one. Also you want to listed to the lyrics and make sure they don’t have any hidden negative language that your guests might be disturbed by. In the end you want to have fun and create an enjoyable atmosphere for you and your guests. If you’re still undecided, have a look at our first dance song selection page.

2. ENTER THE DANCE FLOOR CALM AND CONFIDENT

When it comes to entering the dance floor for your first dance it depends a lot on what your plan is for the day. You can come on the dance floor together or you can come from different parts of the floor, meeting in the middle. Whatever the scenario is, it’s important that you stay calm and look at each other. If you feel nervous, which you might, it helps to take a deep breath before you start. Remember, you do this to have fun, so don’t put too much pressure on your shoulders. You practiced enough so the steps should flow. Listed to the music and follow the rhythm.

3. HOLD A PROPER DANCE POSITION

If we’re thinking about a proper dance position, we have to keep in mind what dance style are you dancing. If you are opting for a more traditional formal dance, then you have to learn to hold a nice position, elbows a bit higher and spine straight. On the other hand if you wan to do a swing or latin dance style , this is more forgiving in terms of position. You need yo learn to relax though. Your hips and knees need to be softer and move with ease. arms can be low and you will look great.

4. DON'T SWAY TOO MUCH

It helps if you take some dance lessons to avoid rocking from side to side like a teenager at his prom. Our instructors can teach you any dance style you want and can fit various dance steps on your song choice.

5. STAY CALM EVEN IF YOU MAKE A MISTAKE

Given the fact that over 90% of the newly married couples don’t have dance experience, it’s likely that you will make a mistake or two during your first dance. Thats not to discourage you because if you choreograph your routine to a song, you can get away with almost any mistake. Say you missed a step . Instead of going back and trying to do it again, or even trying to catch up, you’d be better off just skipping to the next one. this way you can wait a beat or two and if you start the next step right, it will absolutely go unnoticed. remember, your guests don’t know your routine. This is something your dance teacher will help you with.

6. SMILE AND LOOK AT EACH OTHER

Make sure you smile when you dance. Not only will you feel more relaxed and confident to your guests, but you will also look better in pictures if you smile and keep eye contact with your partner. Try to have fun and enjoy this lovely moment as you dance as a married couple for the first time!

7. HOW LONG SHOULD A FIRST DANCE BE?

From our 20+ years of dance experience and hundreds of couples taught, we recommend having a 2 to 3 minutes first dance. Longer than that and two two things happen. Firstly, you will have trouble remembering the order of the steps, and secondly being an amateur dancer, you will get more and more nervous as the time goes by, thus resulting in losing concentration and this is when mistakes happen. If your first dance song is longer than 3 minutes, you can either have your DJ fade it out or your band play a shorter version of it.

8. END WITH A PICTURE PERFECT DIP

The ending of your first dance will likely be one of the most memorable moments to you and your guests. So learn how to execute a nice dip or lift. This will not only wow your guests, but it will also clearly mark the end of your first dance. we suggest ending on a high note in the song so it’s more significant and stands out.

first dance at a wedding

Wedding dance lessons – what to expect

Wedding Dance Lessons - What to expect

Booking your first dance lessons

  • Wether you get in touch with us via our contact form or via phone, your details will be taken by Ana. She is in charge of booking in the clients and making sure everyone is assigned to their preferred instructor.
  • She will ask you a few details about your wedding date, song choice and preferred dance style as well as experience dancing.
  • Once you are happy with the booking time, she will confirm your lesson or 30 minutes trial lesson via email where you can find all the details about our services and how to arrive to the studio and what to wear.

Your Song Choice

  • Usually couples tell us the song they have in mind for their first dance and we begin from there building the choreography to their preferences and ability.
  • If you have a few songs in mind and can’t decide, we recommend starting with the 30 minutes trial lesson. In this time you can speak to your teacher and he/she can advise you on your song choice, of course based on what you like and how you would like your dance to look.
  • If you don’t have any song ideas, we recommend having a look on our blog page to see wedding dance song ideas . This way you can get some inspiration and maybe you can find a song that suits your style.
  • IT IS VERY IMPORTANT for us that you are happy with your song choice and we are happy to change the song choice even after a few lessons. It is your dance and awe want to make it the best possible.
  • If you are worried that the song might be too fast or too slow, our teachers can help you and advise you on figures that make a fast song look slower or vice versa. Again, it is important for you to be happy with your song and we can deal with the steps and choreography for you.

Your Dance Experience

  • No dance experience is required to start your first dance.
  • In fact, over 90% of our clients don’t have any dance experience whatsoever.
  • For this reason, we design your steps and figures to be as straightforward as possible and to include simple, but dynamic transitions. We want to make your first dance look very good and also easy to learn.
  • The most important aspect of dancing especially for beginners is to listen to the music and catch the beat. This is one of the first things you will learn. After that, the steps will follow easier.
  • If you do have dance experience, that’s an added bonus and if you want to take it a step forward and try a more challenging routine, we are more than happy to teach you.

Dance Style and Choreography

  • Along the years we choreographed all dance styles from classic Waltz to more rhythmical Salsa, Tango, Swing, R&B and even traditional dance styles.
  • This is the first thing we do when a couple comes to us. We listen to the music and place it within a dance style that suits the couples dance experience and style.
  • It is important to us that your choreography reflects your style and prefferences so we always ask you to try the steps and tell us if its comfortable for you. In the end that’s what matters most. To feel comfortable and have fun while dancing your first dance.
  • Another very  important aspect to us is the brides dress and how we choreograph your dance with the dress in mind. We will ask you to describe the dress in order to know the limits of the choreography and how to manage. ( for example if you have a ball gown with a bigger train, we will avoid having to step backwards).

When to book your dance lessons

  • We recommend starting your first dance lessons at least two or three months prior to the wedding. This will give you enough time to make sure the choreography is done and you have time to practice.
  • Usually we book the lessons a week apart. This will give you the necessary time to practice and get used to the steps in-between lessons.
  • Most of our couples opt for our package of 5 lessons  in order to have a dance fully choreographed and rehearsed for their big day.
  • We provide a more detailed breakdown for each package option or our blog post

Man and woman dancing their first dance

History of the First Dance

Man and woman dancing their first dance

The first wedding dance is a beautiful celebration that can symbolise the relationship of a couple and a great way to break the ice at the reception. In learning the first dance couples find an opportunity to bond deeper with their partners because it requires teamwork more than other activities. The couples must learn leading and following and steps that might challenge them but in this process they have a good time and the end product symbolises their relationship.

When they come to our dance studio, couples usually are interested in the history of the first dance. In doing so they learn from us that the first dance is quite a new tradition in the wedding celebration. Even though the exact inception or exactly first first dance is unknown, the origins of this tradition come from after WWI. Prior to this the wedding reception was done in European and American  weddings mostly at the brides house. With limited space, the bride and groom would dine with their guests and socialise without much accent on dancing even though music was played by bands.

After the war, publications like newspapers started suggesting the newlyweds have their first dance alone as it would be more intimate. This idea caught up easily among newlyweds and it slowly spread throughout Europe and US. At first this was not treated as a performance or seen as mandatory.

As society evolved, post WWII dance halls started to gain popularity especially in England so dancing was seen more as a social skill, an opportunity to show off maybe or just to have fun. The popularity of Ballroom dancing grew all around Europe and US, even more through TV and as celebrities or very rich people started to adopt the first dance for their weddings, regular people slowly followed.

Nowadays, almost every couple have a sort of wedding dance, wether it being a slow romantic first dance, or a more complicated, choreographed dance in which the couple show off their dancing skills and have a blast in doing so. We would recommend thinking of your first dance as a fun way to spend time with your partner, doing an activity together.

Wedding First Dance FAQs – Advanced Questions | First Dance London

This page is a continuation of our Wedding First Dance FAQs, where we answer the most common questions couples ask before starting wedding dance lessons.

We don't have a song in mind yet. Can we still start the lessons?

Yes that is not a problem. You can start by booking a FREE 30 minutes trial lessons in one of our studios and the teacher will advise you on the song choice or you can browse through our list of songs and make shortlist and discuss it on the lesson.

What if we don't want anything too complicated or choreographed?

Again, that shouldn’t be any problem. We understand that some might not have any dance experience and just want to learn a few basic steps to look elegant on the floor. We can accommodate your needs and we can teach you basic steps that will make you look good on your big day.

What should we wear for the dance lessons?

For the first lesson you can pretty much wear anything as long as you feel comfortable as you will learn a few steps but nothing too complicated. For the rest of the lessons ideally would be to have some trainers / or formal shoes for men and for women a shoe similar to what you will be wearing on the day. This way you will feel safe when dancing your first dance.

What if we don't have any experience at all?

No worries about that. Almost all of our couples have no experience and experience the same “fear”. We will teach you steps that are easy to learn and start from basic concepts that are easy to understand so you feel comfortable and we will progress towards more ellaborate steps when you are ready. The dance styles we teach are generally slow paced and if you feel that you want a challenge we can up the tempo. With a few lessons you will be able to dance and feel more relaxed.

My husband is scared. How can he be reassured?

Most men are a bit reluctant at first. The first thing to know is that we will start slow. With easy steps and clear instructions you will be dancing in no time. We will make sure you understand first and then practice each step until it becomes a habitual movement for your body.

How far apart should we book the lessons?

Generally we would recommend to have the lessons 1 or 2 weeks apart. This gives you some time to practice in between the lessons so the next time we see each other, we use the time to learn more and perfect the steps.

Should we have lessons longer than 1 hour?

This is an option to be considered if you don’t have much time or if you are close to your wedding day. It can also be an option if you want a longer choreography or a medley of songs. In an hours space we can usually cover about 30 seconds to a minute of choreography.

If you’re still at the planning stage, start with our Wedding First Dance FAQs for a complete overview

How can I make my First Dance more interesting?

bridge and groom dancing

The First dance can be a challenge, especially if you are a beginner and want to put on a nice show for your guests. The most important thing is to have fun while doing it, so we are here to give you a few tips to make it stand out.  There are plenty of options to chose from, so  we’ll talk about 5 of the most effective.

1. Choosing the right song for you.

When talking about your first dance song, there’s no right or wrong. It’s just the right song for you to feel special on the day and feel that the song choice represents you, your relationship and your partnership. When you find the right song, everything comes naturally. Even though you will dance in front of tens if not hundreds of people, you will feel at ease because you like the song and it has a meaning for you. That is why we believe the song is the first step in making your first dance a success. Whatever your choice is, we can build a bespoke choreography for you to enjoy on the day.

2. Have a band perform the song.

Another great option is to have a band perform your song. This can give another dimension to your dance as the sounds are unique and thus creates a nice atmosphere. Make sure you have the band record the song before you come to the dance lessons , so you can plan your choreography on the exact song. This is very important as you wouldn’t want any unexpected surprises on the day.

3. Mix it up, try a group dance.

In addition to your fist dance, you can have your close friends dace alongside you and make a wonderful group dance. It doesn’t have to be a professional dance , just make it fun and share this moment with your friends. Another option is the Father-Daughter dance which can give you a special feel that you can enjoy with your loved ones.

4. Have your guests join the dance.

Pick a moment in your dance when guests can join in and make it a party. This is a great choice especially if you have a longer song and you don’t want to dance the whole time alone. Another option to involve the guests is to have them join in straight after your dance with a change in the song and mood. A good combination could be you to dance a more romantic dance and have the guests join in on a more rhythmical dance like salsa or r&b. You can always ask your DJ for suggestions.

5.Try some fancy moves.

Definitely a great way to make your dance stand out is to ask your teacher to teach you a few twirls, dips and maybe even a lift. Don’t worry if you have a bigger dress, your teacher will know how to introduce the figures so that you can dance them easily. You can have twirls in any dance as long as thy sync with the music but just so you know more dynamic dances like Jive, Salsa or Swing have more elaborated turns and dips.

Your first dance is a great moment in the wedding reception so why not try one or more of those tricks to make it a memorable one. Pick a song that says something about you, have the band play it, involve the guests or not, but most importantly have fun and enjoy the dance!

What dance style should I chose as a First Dance?

wedding first dance

Firstly, that's a good question! Let's see the options...

There are many options for your first dance. You have so many dances that would be a great fit for a first dance. You can chose a slow, romantic dance like the English Waltz or Viennese Waltz, or Foxtrot. You could maybe opt for a swing dance style which is a bit faster and can give you a bit of an adrenaline rush being more challenging. Swing Dances are the Jive or East Coast Swing which is slower than jive, thus recommended if you are a beginner. Also a more challenging dance but one of the more spectacular because of its turns, is Salsa. Another option from the latin dances could be Merengue or Bachata. These are Slower than Salsa and popular due to their romantic look.

If you do not have any dance experience, we would definitely recommend a slower dance but even if you chose a faster, more challenging dance, our instructors will be able to teach you basic fun moves which don’t need very much repetition.

Elegant - Romantic Dance Styles

In  this category we can include the more traditional wedding dances like English Waltz, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot and Tango.

Most of them are slower dance styles and for these dances the choreography can be made for a bigger dance floor. The slowest of them all is the English Waltz. This dance style is very easy to learn and requires absolutely no experience. Steps are easy to learn and it helps very much that the music is generally slow.

The Viennese Waltz is usually a more upbeat dance style but in the same time it is very elegant, reminding of the Viennese Balls that still take place in the Austrian capital. A very formal style but a very elegant and still romantic.

The Foxtrot is a bit more playful than the others, usually danced on a faster pace but still holding a solid frame. Frank Sinatra’s songs are generally in this dance style. Again quite romantic but a bit of fun in it as well.

Tango is a different dance all together. The music is more intense and romantic and the rhythm is staccato, sharp and edgy. You can learn it quite easily because of the clear structure but more complex figures might require some at home practice.

Fun Filled Dance Styles

When we talk about fun dancing pleasure we need to talk about Swing. Swing is a great dance style because the dancers can combine different types of twirls and twists and really engage with one another while changing places and swinging hips around. Definitely a bit more challenging but we had couples learn swing in a few lessons and they managed to actually have fun on the big day.

Another fun to watch dance style is Salsa. Salsa is all about the hips and arms. The legs have to move constantly to the rhythm but once you learn the basic steps you can combine them and come up with hundreds of variations that actually make sense. If  you like a challenge we really recommend this dance. You’ll have a sensational night!

Merengue and Bachata. Two similar slow dances but filled with romance and sensuality. Compared with Salsa, which is a faster dance, these two can be danced slower and more attention is given to the relationship rather than the steps. When learning these two styles you will mainly focus on listening to the music and being one with your partner. That makes it very easy and you will enjoy it.

Our advice, start with a song you like.

The best advice we can give you when thinking about your first dance is to chose a song/songs that you both like and has a meaning for you. When you have a song you like it’s much easier and pleasant to learn and feel good in doing so. From there we will take over and help you dance and feel fantastic. On the first lesson we will help you decide on the song, taking into consideration your dance experience and song choice and will guide you to learn and have fun in the process.

Top 10 First Dance Songs – Summer 2019

Summer is in full swing and if you haven’t made up your mind yet about your first dance song, here are a few suggestions to help you.

No.1: Eric Clapton – Wonderful Tonight

This one is a slow song, that we personally like. It’s slow, it’s easy to dance to and you can follow the lyrics to give you the rhythm. Definitely one to be considered if you want a romantic first dance.

No. 2: Ray la Montagne – You are the best thing

This song is so rhythmical and so easy to dance to. The trumpet gives it a nice fresh sound and also the lyrics are very relatable. It’s not a cliche song but its romantic nevertheless.

No. 3: Dean Martin – That’s Amore

Classical Italian song for a summer wedding.  You can have fun on this one playing with the different rhythms. Even though it’s suited to a Viennese Waltz dance style, you can have more steps combined for this song. Have fun listening!

No. 4: Calum Scott & Leona Lewis – You are the reason

One of the most romantic songs we’ve ever heard here at First Dance London. It’s very slow and very easy to learn to dance to, that’s why many couples like this song. You could consider having it as your first dance song if you don’t have very much experience with dancing and pull some nice elegant moves.

No. 5: Ed Sheran – Thinking out loud

Ed Sheran knows how to put that special love feeling into words and songs. One of his best and well known songs goes into this summer’s  top because it genuinely good. We had many couples asking for choreography on this song because of the dancing moves in the clip. Is this your song also?

No. 6: Jason Mraz – Lucky

This song has got the rhythm, feel and fun to its side. A great song to start a party. Starts slowly, goes higher and you can mark the highlights with lifts and dips and in between just the two of you, dancing to a great song.

No. 7: Frank Sinatra & Count Basie – Fly me to the Moon

This song comes from 1954, the era of great hats and foxtrot rhythms. If you have a retro themed party this song and its trumpets are for you. Have fun and dance a slow foxtrot on this song like they used to.

No. 8: Jack Johnson – Better Together

Another slow foxtrot style. Very popular this summer amongst our clients. It’s rhythmical but has a deep message and that makes it one of our favourite songs as well. Enjoy dancing!

No. 9: The Wood Brothers – Luckiest Man

“People say i’m the luckiest man”. We love the lyrics of this song and the way it’s played, very simple with just the guitar and the voice. Makes a very good choice for a simple chic wedding amongst friends and loved people.

No. 10: Sixpence None the richer – Kiss Me

The song title says it all. You know it’s a good first dance song the moment you hear the chorus. Style wise its fitted for a swing, more alert dance but that doesn’t mean the figures and steps will be difficult. You can have lots of fun with simple jive steps and twist and twirl on this song all night long.

We hope you enjoyed our first dance songs selection and hope to see you in one of our locations for a great time learning your first dance. Until then, keep on loving each other and keep on dancing!

First Dance Tips

Make your first dance an unforgettable experience

The First Dance London team has worked with numerous couples and throughout the years we have learned a lot about how to best prepare your wedding. In this article we would like to share with you some tips that we hope will guide you into making your wedding dance an unforgettable experience.

Planning

  1. Have your song picked at your first lesson or bring your top 2 or 3 songs for the teacher to help you choose the best one for your dance. Make the most of the time in the studio as it is very valuable and you want to spend it wisely. If you haven’t decided yet on a favourite song, have a look on this list of songs.
  2. Try to keep your wedding dance around 3 minutes. This way your guests will be engaged and entertained the entire time. Keep it sweet, entertaining and impressive!

Rehearsals

  1. Important for the ladies! Practice with the wedding shoes if possible. Dancing in heels is totally different from dancing in flats. Also let your teacher know if your wedding dress will restrict your movement in any way. If you have any decorations on the upper part that might restrict your hands from rising, or if your train is very long. Best is always to have a photo of your dress with you to show your dance teacher.
  2. Take videos! This is a great  dance practice tool and often used by our clients. Having a video with the steps learned will help you remind every detail and will make your practice much much easier.
  3. Dancing is about enjoying each other’s company. Be supportive to each other and remember that you are in this together. This is your time to connect and enjoy.

The Performance

  1. Remember that no one else knows your wedding dance routine , so even if you make a mistake it’s ok. Have fun and smile.
  2. This is your moment together with your partner, relax and enjoy.

Preparing your wedding dance it’s not only about performing your first dance on your wedding day, it’s also about enjoying the dance lessons and the whole process. It’s a great chance to spend time together with your future husband or wife, dancing on one of your favourite songs.

Wedding First Dance FAQs

When is the right time to start preparing our first dance?

Depending on your ability, if you have dance experience or not, and just if you feel confident, we would recommend to strat at least one month before the wedding. In the article Wedding First Dance Lessons – What to expect & how many is enough?, we address the planning of the lessons so you can figure out how much time you have and we recommend the first few lessons to be closer together and the last ones to be left for closer to the wedding.

We have a few songs in mind. How should we decide?

Firstly, our teachers recommend you to chose the song you both like. That is the most important aspect. If it’s a choice between a rhythmical and a slower song and you like both, we could suggest to start on the slower one, get the mood going and then surprise everyone with some cool moves on the second one. A good combination is Waltz and Salsa for example. We have couples that opt to dance for a minute or so on the waltz or blues song, and then break the rhythm with salsa. It can be Merengue, Bachata, Jive/Swing, important is to like the songs. We’ll take care of the choreography.

Where do you teach?

In this aspect we are quite flexible. We have two teaching locations in Mayfair – London, one studio in Kennington – Oval Station and another one in Dulwich near North Dulwich train station. All our studios are located within walking distance from tube or train stations so they are easy to access. They have top of the line sound equipment and you can opt for total privacy in your dance lesson. Also we have the option to teach you in the privacy of your home. All you need to do is tell us in the contact form and we can arrange that for you. One of our dance instructors will come to you and help you with your first dance choreography.

Wedding couple dancing their first dance in black and white.

What packages of lessons do you offer?

We have Package options depending on the studio you chose to have your lessons in. Please see the complete price list and studio locations here. We also offer a free 30 Minutes introduction lesson for Dulwich and Kennington studios. For other studios the Trial lesson option is priced at £15 for 30 minutes.

What should we expect from the 30 Minutes Trial Lesson?

The trial lesson is for you to duscuss with the dance teacher about the following: wedding location, space on the dance floor, details about the dress, shoes, if you have any special requirements and so on. If you are not sure yet on the song choice our teachers will advise you on the best option. They will make a personalised plan around your schedule and book the lessons. You can read more about the trial lesson in our blog 30 Minutes Trial Lesson – WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT?

What is the duration of a dance lesson?

The normal dance session lasts 60 minutes. But there are times when we have couples with less time until the wedding and we would suggest to have longer sessions. In this case we would recommend you to have 1.5 h sessions, or depending on the circumstances, even 2h sessions. Longer than that we believe it’s not productive anymore.

What is the booking procedure?

We usually take the bookings through our contact form. We thought it to be simple and efficient with relevant options to chose from and a space for your requests.  Also we are available via phone from Monday to Friday – 8 AM to 10 PM. Please feel free to contact us however is more convenient for you.

Do you teach group dances - bride & bridesmaids /groom & groomsmen?

Yes we do. Please contact us and let us know about your group and we would be happy to help you.

Wedding Dance Lessons – what to expect & how many is enough?

bride and groom celebrating their wedding

We often have enquiries form couples that want their wedding dance choreographed but don’t really know what to expect from their lessons. How many lessons should you have to feel confident and relaxed on the big day?

Well, it depends...

If you opt for a simple choreography, 2 - 2 and a half minutes, we would recommend to opt for the Gold Package. Here's why?

It usually takes a few lessons to build up the choreography, meaning steps, positioning on the dance floor, directions and timing on the music. Depending on each couples ability we reckon between 3 and 4 lessons will be enough to learn the steps and feel comfortable with the basics. We recommend that these lessons are done closer to one another. This way, you will have the choreography done and you can keep the rest of the sessions for polishing the edges.

1st Lesson: You will learn a few basic steps to help you further along in developing the choreography, along with very important leading and following advice.

2nd and 3rd Lesson: Your dance instructor will teach you the choreography, directions, timing. They should make a small video at the end of each lesson for you to have and practice before the next session.

4th and 5th Lesson: Depending on how you progress and how quickly you learn the choreography, these last two lessons are kept for styling, presentation and small details that might appear when you start doing the choreography on the music.

If the teacher sees fit, they will recommend another lesson to make sure you practice enough and feel really confident with all the steps.

For couples that want something more entertaining, challenging, maybe a collage of 2 or 3 songs, 3- 4 minutes of choreography, we would strongly recommend to have the Platinum Package.

This offers you enough time to really think the choreography through with all the changes and moments when you need to link the songs. Here is a summary of what you can expect from the Platinum Experience.

1st Lesson: This will be mainly used to plan the choreography and how the songs will go together, dips and lifts if it’s the case, showing the teacher ideas that you have.

2nd Lesson: Once everything is clear about how the choreography will look like, it’s time to go to the basics. Your teacher will go through the basics and prepare you for the more difficult steps.

3rd – 7th Lessons: In this time frame the instructor will teach you the choreography, steps, lifts and dips, going through all the details. We allow time in these lessons for changes as well. So if you feel in any way that the steps are too difficult or do not fit with your personality and style, please feel free to ask the teacher to give you another option. We are committed to providing you with a choreography that you can dance and enjoy 100%.

8th – 10th Lessons: It’s all about PRACTICE. Your instructor will have you repeat the choreography and with each repetition, he/she will signal the mistakes, correct the posture, adjust the timing if needed and so on.

By the end of the lessons you should feel that you had plenty of practice on the choreography.

wedding first dance lessons

An experience for two – written by Anna Dima

An experience for two

Having the pleasure to work with so many wedding couples, I had the chance to observe how they experience the whole process of taking dance lessons, practicing, deciding on each and every detail and finally dancing in front of their guests on the big day.

Planing the wedding while keeping on with life it’s not an easy job, so I soon noticed that the dance lessons were a great way for our wedding couples to spend quality time together. It was a break for their daily activities and a chance to focus on each other.

Besides receiving videos from happy couples, with the wedding dances I choreographed, seeing how much wedding couples enjoy dancing together is the most rewarding.

Wedding dance lessons are not only a way of preparing to dance in front of your guests at the wedding, but an amazing chance to spend time with your future husband or wife, in a friendly environment, dancing on one of your favourite songs.

Wedding Dance – Answers to your questions

WEDDING DANCE - ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS

Your wedding dance is one of the memories that will last forever and we know how important it is to be absolutely amazing and to match your personality and your wedding style.

Working with numerous wedding couples in creating unforgettable first dances, we’ve put together the questions we are most often asked.

Wedding couple dancing their first dance in black and white.

1. When is the best time to prepare for your first dance?

It depends on how easily you pick up the steps and how complex you would like your routine to be.

We definitely recommend not to leave it for the last moment, so you get enough practice in order to get used to the steps, therefore when you dance at the wedding to simply enjoy it and all to go smoothly.

2. What song should we choose?

Your wedding dance should reflect you personally and your wedding style, so we suggest to choose a song that has a significance to you and your partner.

We offer 30 minutes free introductory lesson, to make sure together that the song is the right one for the day and to help you make an idea of how dancing on the chosen song would look like .

Click Here for some inspiration in choosing your wedding dance song, from Vogue.

3. What can I expect from the dance lessons ?

A lesson lasts 60 minutes in which you and your partner will have the full attention of the teacher.  You will listen to the song together with the instructor and  carefully plan how you would like the wedding dance to look like. The teacher will show you some of the steps, danced with your chosen song, so you can have a better idea and make sure the choreography of your first dance as a married couple matches your preferences.

4. How many dance lessons show we have ?

Again, here it depends a lot on the complexity of the routine and on your song choice.

The teacher will advise you on the number of lesson after the FREE 30 MINUTES INTRODUCTORY CLASS.

For a 1-2 minutes choreography we definitely recommend to have at least 3 lessons.

We will carefully plan with you each lesson in order to make sure we use the time in the best way possible and fit everything in before the wedding.

5. Wedding dance lessons for beginners - Can I really learn to dance ?

Yes. Anybody can learn to dance with a little bit of practice.

Going for a routine that’s within your comfort zone will allow you to elegantly perform your first dance with ease.

We will make sure each step matches your ability and you are perfectly comfortable with it.

Preparing you wedding dance for the big day is an enjoyable experience and a great way to spend time with your loved one.
