How to ease your first dance nerves?

What you can do to feel better on the day

It’s almost impossible to come across a person that doesn’t get nervous before dancing their first dance. Nerves are natural, and dealing with and embracing those nerves can be difficult! Here are a few tips to help you manage the inevitable pre-first dance jitters:

Move around a little bit before the first dance

We know it’s difficult to sit still when you are nervous! It will help if you move around a little bit just before the big moment. By moving you will release the tension in your muscles and get the body ready for movement.

Visualize yourself dancing your choreography.

Take that moment just before you are ready to dance to visualise your choreography , your step sequence and really focus on the order of the steps. This will make your mind more sharp and ready to go.

Take deep breaths.

Also referred to as centered breathing, taking slow deep breaths helps slow your heart rate and control your nerves. One deep breathing technique is the 4x4x4x4; breathe in through your nose for 4 seconds, hold it in for 4 seconds, breathe out through your mouth for 4 seconds and hold at the end of the breath for 4 seconds. Following a pattern as such will lessen the effects of your nerves and help you feel calm!

Don’t over practice!

If you had your choreography done with First Dance London, you already should have practiced a lot. We make sure that you are ready to dance your best on the big day. So over practicing won’t make much of a difference. The important thing is to trust the process and to know that whatever happens, you did enough practice and you’ll do great. We recommend to go through your choreography once or twice on the day just to make sure everything is right.

Everyone is different, so what works for you, might not work for others. The important aspect is to enjoy the day and have fun. And remember, you’re surrounded by your loved ones and this is your day. Let’s DANCE!
